Socks
3 June, 2007, 04:22 pm
Conwy, yay! From the book Knitting on the Road, with Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock (mmm) in the color Green Valley. I believe I mentioned I didn't bother with the decreases.
I'm not quite happy with the fit. It feels.. funny. And one of the things I value most about hand knit socks is the perfect sizing. My feet are a bit big for the normal sized socks and a bit small for the large sized socks you buy in stores. Anyway, here you see the wrinkles. I assume that means there's too much fabric, and I'm guessing it has to do with the heel. I've only knit 10 or 15 pairs of socks but I've never had this problem before. So, the modified strong heel was great fun to knit but..?
I made some stockings yesterday. Talk about instant gratification, especially if you don't bother with the hangy loop.
I made these last weekend. Those are presents on the fabric.
Not much knitting happening today. My wrists are in a funk again. I have my theory as to why they've been crappy the last few weeks. If I am right they will have to wait until August. I got one of those massaging glove things from the drug store today, see if that helps.

Monthly Update
2 June, 2007, 02:00 pm
Just kidding, but it's kinda getting that way isn't it?
How cute, a tee-tiny preemie hat! I've got a few more of these to make. See how the x and c keys are missing? Heh.
This big fluffy is on my crap list. He wouldn't stay off the laptop so eventually I gave up and closed it on him. He popped a couple keys off when he finally realized he couldn't fit in a closed laptop.. He started the morning off right by biting me.. twice! At 4:50 AM on a Saturday morning. He was banished from the bedroom. These are a little more difficult than a regular keyboard *shrug* If I can't figure it out I'll just get a regular keyboard. Except then I will also need a USB hub since my laptop only has two ports. And I hate spending money on stupid stuff like that. I'd much rather spend 50 bucks on yarn, yummy yarn. Y'know..
Goals Thoughts
Improve knitting technique? Not really. I did finally get a copy of the fair book but judging is mid July and that doesn't leave much time.
Save money? Yeah, despite buying a new tv. Hehe. I finally got some $ moved to a money market so that will help a little. I've seriously been trying to do that since January. I found a helpful financial adviser.
Be more active? Yeah.. digging the nice weather. I've been getting 25-30 minutes in 5-6 days a week. I'd like to bump it up more but it will have to wait.

Red Scarf Project
19 May, 2007, 03:37 pm
Wow! Did you see the overwelming response to the red scarf project? Apparently it was so big that this year there will be a limit of 10 scarves per warmhearted donator. I did want to throw out a few options in case your fingers are still itching to make charity scarves.
Online Angels accepts scarves among other things (hats, mittens, health & beauty, etc..) anytime of the year
Native American Support (This is a Yahoo! Group page) accepts scarves (and hats and mittens) for folks living on the reservations. CIC-knits is featuring the group in May-June.
Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation also accepts scarves.
Fear not :)

I Think I'm in Love..
18 May, 2007, 05:59 pm
with the modified strong heel. No wraps, no picking up stitches, no holes to prevent! It looks a lot like the um, traditional (?) heel flap and gusset method. Basically you increase to almost double your heel flap and then do the short rows for the heel turn except you keep doing that till you're back to the number you started with for the heel flap. Okay, I'm not good at explaining things.
Not much else in knitting. My wrists are still doofy.
In other news, tomorrow is my birthday. I haven't gifted myself yet. Not sure if I'm going to. It used to be a good opportunity to treat myself but now I get most of what I want when I want it so it's not a big thing. Spoiled much?

Pictures
12 May, 2007, 12:34 am
Well. I just closed the window in which I was working up a post. Now for a second try..
Here's Conwy. Maybe you'll remember I was wondering about the stitch counts in the Knitting on the Road book. On second look, they work out fine with the suggested gauge, I just don't like the gauge :) Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock has listed gauge of 7.5 spi. So when it goes down to 60 stitches it's still 8 inches around. I didn't bother with the decreases 'cause I'm getting 9-9.5 spi. Most fingering weight yarns I've done around 8 spi and 64 stitches and get a nice fit. I just can't see walking on Lorna's Laces that loosely knit.
Here's my first handspun. Um, I was experimenting. The first stuff I spun doubled back on itself and sorta plied itself when I let go. I thought that was a problem so I tried to fix that. You can see that stuff, it's kinda big and sloppy. Then I posted on the Spinners group on Yahoo! and found it was normal to have that um, self-plying effect so I went back to the old way. That stuff is on top of the pile in the picture. Oo, I can't leave the big furball alone with that nice cotton candy looking fiber. He eats it. Ask me how I know.
This is the life.
Here's another view.

Update
5 May, 2007, 09:09 am
A pretty boring one, sorry. I got out early yesterday with the intention of having some quality knitting time and catching up on some cleaning. My wrists have been a little off lately so there was no knitting. Incidentally there was no cleaning either, but I did spend ridiculous amounts of time on Youtube. I did start the afghan and my Conwy socks are slowly moving along.
Youtube is tricky. It started innocently enough looking for spinning instructions. It led to a young college guy that can spin and from there I managed to get to the collection of a schizophrenic house wife with a husband that believes in the peak oil theory and then to some transgender folks. Can you tell I come from a small city? Yes, I did find some spinners demonstrating. They make it look very easy.
I settled and bought a drop spindle and a small bit of roving on eBay. I realized that though the tools are different, the basic process is the same. A spinning wheel still looks a easier to me, but whether you use 3 hands or 2 hands and a foot it still looks like you need to have a lil coordination. Anyway, if I still want a wheel after that, there's an interesting looking place about two hours from me that offers all sorts of stuff, including yarn and spinning classes and wheels. I found it interesting that all the shops I found in WI have pretty much the exact same price on each wheel, as in, off by two pennies or so. That makes it easier.. I found eBay wasn't much cheaper.
In other news.. I switched my cat from Science Diet Light (main ingredient - rice, wtf?) to Eukanaba Weight something-or-other (main ingredient - chicken, real chicken). Not only does he pick all of the Eukanuba kernels out first, but he's lost like 2 pounds in the month or so he's been on the new food. He actually gained weight on the Science Diet so I had to keep cutting back. And he does not beg for food like he used to, despite getting the same scant half cup a day. Win-win, all around I say. (Except the pocketbook, of course.)
That's enough un-related babble. I'm going grocery shopping.

Spinning
30 April, 2007, 07:16 pm
Yikes. I've put this thought out of my head many times. I always thought spinning looked like fun. There's a couple of problems. A drop spindle just really doesn't appeal to me. I live in an average sized one bedroom apartment. Wheels are expensive and I'm getting somewhat tight-fisted. I have too much yarn. Do I need a roving collection to go along with it? Ooh, and that furball that likes to chew on yarn.
In the past I didn't have any use for hand-washable wool. Heh. :) But I've been enjoying knitting for CIC. And then I realized you could get superwash roving also. Curious, huh? I dunno.
I've been car shopping lately, so I'm fairly certain a spinning wheel is not happening, at least anytime soon. Car shopping sucks. It makes me like my car more and more. I don't understand how technology continues to improve and fuel efficiency continues to suck. I'd be stepping backward in buying most cars. It makes me question my reasons for needing a new one, y'know? I was close to a Cobalt, or a Focus, but I just can't give them my business in return for being less efficient than they were 10 years ago. The oil's not gonna last forever. Neither is the environment. Poo..
