Smelly yarn & Webrings     19 September, 2004, 10:00 pm
The kitty litter has been bagged with the smelly yarn for two weeks and no de-smelling yet. Other suggestions, anyone?

I waited patiently for a month to pass so that I could join the Knitter's Blog Webring. Surprise, they closed it in the past few days. It is to be closed for a month or two. I can imagine how requests will pile up in that time. I am attempting to create my own ring for anyone else that wishes to be a part of a knit blogger ring in the nearer future, but first I must join a ring. The best I could find was the link you see to the right. Looks like a great group, though. Hope to be approved.

Baby Blanket & Dad's Hat     17 September, 2004, 01:37 pm
I cast on for the baby blanket not too long ago. I only finished half a row and already I'm taking a break. I'm beginning to wonder whether the "simply" in the title refers to the process or the product. There are lots of SSSKs and that sorta thing. This could take me awhile, most especially because it's knit with sportweight. I hate having to wonder if I'm doing things right. It was intended for a craft sale but then it must be completed by November..heh heh. By the way, if you're interested in helping the critters with your knit or otherwise crafted crafts, leave a comment or send a note. They need crafts for their sales and auctions. Anything from catnip mice to a baby blanket, to those furry scarves. Dishclothes are quick and easy and seem to sell well, also.

My dad found his hat and he seems to like it. He promised to tell everyone at work I made it for him. Thanks dad.. *snicker* Apparently he doesn't like tight hats so the fact that it's overly large is a good thing, in this case.

I finished the present. I just need to launder it, but I need to do it when I'm certain the giftee won't pop in. This may be the hardest part. I love it. Good thing I have the yarn to make myself a copy..hehe. The only glitch for me is my cast-on edge is too tight, but not nearly as bad as some others I've done.

I was planning to buy handmade soap to go with my dishclothes as an easy gift to have on hand for whatever comes up next. While I was wandering around Michaels I found the soapmaking section. I bought the stinky soap, some apple fragrance, a leaf/flower mold, and a package of fall colors. All told, I can make a small soap, perhaps 1.5 oz, or 3 inches in diameter, for about 50 cents. That's not the good part, though. It's fun mixing colors and adding scents and all that good stuff.. and it's so easy - at least if you buy the block of soap. I can make it even cheaper buying the soap at Joann Fabrics with their 40% off coupon, and buying the scents on eBay. I'm sure it won't take me long to amass enough colorful smelly soaps to last me a lifetime. Good thing the family seems to like them..

Dishcloth Exchange & Dad     12 September, 2004, 11:18 pm

Yay! I received my first dishcloth. Oddly enough, it's in the same pattern I've been using, but, I would *never* pick these colors, except maybe for someone else. But I love how it turned out. The orange/white/yellow is really.. fresh.

My father's finished hat, in Caron Simply Soft black, 2 strands held together throughout. Disappointed again. Too large. Don't like the decreases bunching the top together. I suppose it would be fine if the pompon was on top. I made my dad try it on before I stitched the top and he said it wasn't too big. But it is. I will be disappointed if he doesn't wear it, only because I made him try it on and he said it fit. Now the pattern. I picked up right away that the ribbing, a K2P2 repeat, wasn't gonna work perfectly. You were supposed to end P2, but with 74 cast on stitches, obviously you have to do some fudging with a 4 stitch repeat (74/4 leaves remainder 2, no?). I ended up doing K3P3 at the end of the round. The same is true for the decreases, two rows of K2together.. leaving an oddball stitch. One other person who had tried the pattern suggested she had no problems. Apparently I'm the only math-minded one nearby. But what I'm really wondering is how you go through knitting life not noticing that? *shrugs*

Progress     8 September, 2004, 09:49 pm
..is slowing down since school started again. I'm nearly finished with a gift due to be given in a little over two weeks. I made a cute little tag for it out of cardstock for the washing instructions.

I'm about halfway on my father's hat. I like it so far. The decreases are different than the other hats I've made so we'll see what gives when I get that far, but so far so good.

I started a charity hat. It's another boring pattern with boring navy blue yarn. I decided that's the last of boring charity hats - unless I need some mindless knitting. I've been collecting "fun" patterns - textures n such to liven things up. I doubt the kids will care, but I do :) I'm still waiting on a list of stores in the area that accept Caps for Kids. I decided I won't ship charity items just because I'll be paying as much as or more than the yarn cost just to get it to its destination. Not only that, but there are enough needy people right here in my own backyard, so to speak.

I'm itching to make a pretty rippled baby afghan. First I need to finish a couple current projects and use up some yarn, 'cause I told myself I wouldn't buy anymore till I used a chunk of what i have. You all know how that goes.. ;)

I've finished my fifth dishcloth and I'm sick of the pattern I've been using. I need to swatch and calculate a new stitch before starting anymore. I dislike swatching so that puts dishclothes at a standstill for a few weeks.

Finally, I've been named organizer for the local knitting group on Meetup.com. The position is only four days old, but so far I'm not getting any responses to the emails I've sent. From what I can tell, this group was never active. We have 9 members but some joined a year or two ago, so perhaps they've forgotten all about us. The next meetup is scheduled for a week from today and I'm the only one who marked whether I could make it. My plan of attack is to take some posters, once I find a color printer, to the LYS and craft stores and see if they will let me post them. Hopefully any new members will be a little more active so we can get rolling. I'm so anxious to find real live people that understand me..lol. I love to see what other people are making, as well. It would also be cool to meet some people my own age, but I know that's pushing it..hehe.

Box of Yarn & Needles     3 September, 2004, 11:39 am
Yesterday I got two boxes in the mail. The first contained..

a set of Denise Interchangeable needles. Woohoo! The join is no worse than other circular needs I've used but I think I still prefer my "sticks" for straight needles. This should eliminate most future needle buying, though.

The second box contained..

yarn! This is the dollar a ball stuff. It has an odor that reminds me of a thrift store and it smells a bit smokey, although I'm no odor expert. Research says a week in a bag with kitty litter should do the trick, so I will try getting that set up over the weekend. I'm running out of bedroom space though so this will be tricky. I think all washables will be used for charity knitting, except maybe some of the Mary Maxim stuff. I'd like to try some of that weird textured stuff (lower left corner) on hats, maybe held together with regular yarn. I think there's some wool in there that I can use for the slipper pattern I posted the other day. In any event, I need to put some yarn to good use due to the space issues..lol.

Dishclothes     31 August, 2004, 03:40 pm
I've finished two more dishclothes. One at 8 inches and one at 7 - the first of the size it is supposed to be :) ..and it's pretty small. I personally prefer the larger ones, but I'll do my best to get the rest where they're supposed to be.

I got the dpns I need to start my cat bed so that will begin soon. I'm anxious to work with the wool. It feels so cool.

I also started a second pair of socks. I'm using Lion's Magic Stripes and the pattern from the ball band. Simple knitting I can take to school, which starts this week :-o

On an off-topic note, if you've been thinking about adopting an animal, now's a great time. Shelters across the country are full of dogs, cats, and other critters like hamsters, guinea pigs, parakeets, cockatiels, gerbils, rats, you get the idea.. Unfortunately, that often means animals are euthanized. Every time an animal is adopted, two lives are saved - the animal you've adopted, and the animal that can take its place. If an animal isn't for you, maybe you could send your local shelter a dollar or two, or volunteer for an hour. Every bit helps and is needed.

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
