Mini Mittens and Stash reduction     23 October, 2004, 05:37 pm
First, I already broke my rule about buying yarn. I bought two skeins to make the mittens featured in the premier issue of Women's Day knit/crochet magazine. There's some cute stuff in there and a survey, so do check it out if you get a chance. My mittens in worsted are turning out larger than I expected. In fact, if I sewed two together I could probably get my hand in, and my hand is no small hand. So of course I had to go buy some baby yarn for the next pair. Which means I'll need to buy smaller needles, but anyway. I also bought a cable holder and a row counter. I need neither right at the moment but I plan to use both in the near future.

I did, however, send two skeins of wool off to someone that had time to make another kitty bed for the Adopt-A-Senior-Cat-Month effort. warm fuzzies for me. And I finally got the box to mail my kitty pi off so it should get there in time.

Last, on an un-knit note. I'm learning to crochet. Wow, go me! I'm using the magazine I mentioned in combination with Internet diagrams to make a Snuggle for the shelter I volunteer at. I ripped the first two attempts but I think I finally have it down so the third attemp is the er.. charm. Right? If not, there are two upcoming classes at my local craft store for only $10 each, plus supplies. Can't beat that.

New Shop!     17 October, 2004, 12:23 am
I'm so excited, I just found out we have a new shop in town. The only shop in town. Our former shop closed right about when I began knitting. It's called the Knit Picker, suggesting a knitting shop. I'm hoping that means yarn, magazines, needles.. but all I've seen is garments. It was closed when I drove past so I'll get the hours and plan a visit. I'm headed to the book store later in hopes of finding Family Circle's Easy Knitting.

I've a new rule for myself. No more yarn until I use 8 skeins. Why 8 skeins? I dunno. It sounded like a good number. As I went to bed last night I realized I have yarn all over my room, so some must go before I acquire any new stuff. This may take forever between the busy season at both school and work.

--Off-topic-- My local shelter has 175 cats. That is way more than the shelter was built to handle, but they are trying to operate as a no-kill shelter, only euthanizing for behavioral and health issues. Therefore, they are begging people to a) adopt a cat, b) donate funds, c) donate supplies. I wish I could do any of those..lol. They are even having a "sale" on cats, lowering adoption fees for those that have been there the longest and some others that are hard to adopt out due to age, color, temperment, etc. I am sure this situation is far from unique.. so if you can do _any_ of the above (a, b, or c) please inquire at your local shelter.

Pictures n stuff     15 October, 2004, 01:44 pm

This is the finished kitty pi. I like it.

This is the catch from Lisa's I mentioned last post. I was surprised at how fast it arrived. It, too, comes with a smell. Smokey-ish. It will join the coffee bean yarn, which seems to be working. I only wonder if, when the coffee bean smell fades, can you smell the smoke/thrift store stuff again? Hope not ~.~ I can deal with coffee beans, though.

This is my mouse, Princess Fiona, just because I thought she was really cute. Excuse the cage bar running through the photo.

Denim yarn for socks. They should be extremely comfy, but I don't know that they'll hold up too well. All I need to do now is knit them. ha. ha.

The koolaid dyed fisherman's wool. The one on top that's a little lighter, and obviously a different color, was my attempt at handpainting. I like it but I was running out of koolaid, so the rest of the skeins & yarn got thrown together in a large casserole dish. I'd like to try again but I don't like the feel of this particular wool.

Yarn Order     10 October, 2004, 00:26 am
I placed a small (8 skein) order from yarn-and-threadbylisa.com. Anyone heard of or used this place? I'm pinching pennies and I don't _need_ anymore yarn, especially since I can't knit much with school, but I couldn't resist the prices. I haven't tried any of the yarn I ordered before, but I've been wanting to. Most is the Bernat Handicrafter Cotton at 75 cents a skein in some fun colors. I also ordered a skein of Lily Elite Cotton. I almost bid on some on eBay but thought this way I could try one skein and if I don't like it I don't have the bag full. Last I got a skein of Patons Canadiana because I've heard good things about it. It is 100% acrylic but should be a step above the Supersaver we all know and love. Check out the Best Bargain section of their website if interested. Best of all? There appears to be no minimum order! At least, it didn't stop me from placing an 8 dollar order.

Magazines     8 October, 2004, 01:24 pm
Is anyone interested in selling a couple back issues of magazines to me somewhat cheaply? I'm having issues finding them around here and I don't want a whole subscription. Ideally, knitting mags from within the last 5 or so years, especially Family Circle's Easy Knitting. Really dig the winter ones but any are fine. Leave a comment or mail me, k n i t @ r m i l y . c o m Thanks.

Kitty Pi, Christmas Presents, Wool     8 October, 2004, 11:32 am
First, an almost finished Kitty Pi. It is drying now, but this is the pre-felted version.

I think it's cute. Well, not from this view but.. you'll see. I am wishing I'd used more fun fur. I'm afraid it may be a bit floppy, but I didn't want to felt it anymore as it's about 12 inches in diameter. I can't help but wishing I had a furry senior kitty to "put" in the kitty pi. Someday.

Next is yarn for a Christmas present. This will be the only handcrafted present. Had to go for cheap but "soft" is a necessity.

Last is the LionBrand Fisherman's Wool. I'm still debating on using it for Knitty's Fuzzy Feet or another kitty pi. It was dyed last night, but here it is in all it's pre-dyed glory.

My first shot at dying went okay. I wish I had "handpainted" more, but I was running out of koolaid and it was inching toward my bedtime. I accidentally started felting some of it while I was trying to speed up the cooling off process. It should be okay after it is balled, 'cause it's at the point where it is sticking together but can be carefully pulled apart. Anyway, more pictures coming.

The flyer I posted at the craft store has yet to bring us new members on meetup.com. We have yet to have a meetup. It's okay at the moment since I'm busy with school but this, too, is disappointing.

Afghan & Cat bed     30 September, 2004, 09:35 am
Yes, I have pictures today. My brother & (new) sister-in-law whisked my camera's card off to Hawaii so I had to dig out a backup.

This is the afghan they received, post laundering. They seemed to like it and it got a couple flattering compliments. Ph-ew. It was made with a size 15 circular, and 8 skeins of Redheart's Light & Lofty. Someone suggested it must have taken a long time to make, but I believe it's called "Cozy Weekend Afghan" or something to that effect. While not finished in a weekend, it wasn't time-consuming.

This is the start of my cat bed, on my messy night stand. I've decided rather than making it a yarn basket, it will go to Wendy's cause (cat beds for senior cats adopted through Petfinder during Adopt-A-Senior-Cat-Month). That means it must be finished by the beginning of November, though.

On the needles now: baby blanket, boring stocking cap, cat bed. I've also picked up my first set of crochet hooks (6 of the mid sized range) but it could be months before I touch them.

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
