Mitten Disappointment
27 November, 2004, 08:54 pm
I finished my first mitten and have a few issues.
1. A mid-mitten fitting session made me realize that these will do next to nothing for a Wisconsin winter. I've found a bulky pattern and may try that next. These fit really well though :(
2. Top of mitten and thumb. What does one do with these? Pull the yarn through remaining stitches and weave in? I assumed that would leave a hole. But, I tried the kitchener stitch on the mitten top and not only does it look stupid, but however I did it, my middle finger nearly pokes through. On the thumb I tried another seam, don't know what it's called but it is said to be insivible. It isn't.
3. Holes. I have two of them that are quite noticeable and assumably drafty. They are located inbetween the original thumb stitches and the pickup stitches from the hand.
I don't want to finish the second one. I guess that's a good chance to figure out some of these problems for the next pair, though.

Spots & Spikes
20 November, 2004, 11:29 pm
..is all that's left of my dog's dinosaur sweater. I finished the ribbing today, which means I wasn't studying for my database exam. But it's pretty cute and fits pretty well. It does look odd when she's not wearing it because she's so barrel-chested and the back is pretty short, out of proportion is what I'm getting at. She even growled at my mother when my mom tried to take it off of her after her fitting..hehe. I think she was more bothered at being fussed with than anything, but I'd like to think she just likes it that much >:)
Is anyone else bothered by the limit of the Fiber RAOK ring? I signed up, knowing I'd be queued, but not quite realizing there are 62 ahead of me. At this rate I'll be 30 or so before I'm allowed in. I need to take that ring stuff off my page.. Anyone interested in starting another? Perhaps not so exclusive?
I took my mittens off the needles so I could use them for the sweater ribbing. I had made a mistake anyway, and hardly got them started. I figured if I picked them up I'd screw them up more anyway. Next time I start I need to write the directions out so I can scribble on them n such. That needs to be soon, temperatures are droppin' and I want my wooly mittens. ~.~

Good Thing I'm Poor
19 November, 2004, 11:24 am
Well, not really poor. Just too poor to be spending money on yarn I don't need. I just decided this is a good thing. If I had extra money for yarn, I'd buy it, not have time to use it, and it would pile up worse than it does now. The same goes for books, magazines, and patterns. As long as I don't have large amounts of money to spend on them, the piles are minimal. I'm just getting around to putting all my print-offs in a binder. I intend to separate them- Done, WIP, Future. The waiting to be started section I want to organize more by categories- decorations, afghans, clothing, or something like that.
I am to the duplicate stitching on the dog's sweater. I tried in on while she was sleeping last night, which involved finding a fourth leg and pulling it out from under her so I could shove it in the leg hole. She growled and moved to laying teeth on flesh. She stops there when she realizes _I'm_ not going to stop whatever I'm doing. I don't think either of the dogs would ever dare break skin on purpose..hehe. Anywho, we're skipping the dup stitching for now and going right to the seam. Then I'm gonna throw some fish line or something through the stitches still on the needle and try it on her.. hopefully when she's not trying to sleep. That was kinda rude of me. I dreamt we had a third beagle last night, a boy from Canada. This is odd. I think it was partly because I saw a beagle named Charlie in someone's knitting blog last night. Don't know where Canada came from.. Lord knows there's enough beagles on death row in Green Bay. *sniffle*

Dishcloths
16 November, 2004, 08:33 pm
I mailed 8 dishcloths for the exchange. The 9th is waiting for an address. I have received one so far, I'm anxious to see the others.
One of my professors went on a tangent today, after seeing one of his students play a horn in a performance of some sort. It made me feel not at all guilty about taking some time to knit despite having so much to do. Ironically, he's the professor that loads work on. I admit I'm learning a lot and I enjoy the challenge, but wow.
I am nearly finished with the dog sweater. I need another inch or two of stockinette stitch, a seam, an inch of ribbing and some duplicate stitched spots., oh, and the spikey things along the back. I hope it fits. It doesn't look like it will be too large, but I won't be happy till it's on her. I was also afraid she wouldn't want to wear it, but so far she's let me drape it on her. She's a really timid dog that gets scared easily.

Caps for Kids & Charity Knitting
14 November, 2004, 06:12 pm
I finally got a response. Not the list of local stores I asked for. Rather, a template letter that goes like this, with my comments in []:
"Dear
Thank you for your great box of caps. I always appreciate seeing your names on the boxes that come in.
...
and will again have many more local site to drop the caps off at
...
I will continue to take caps for the remainder of this year or you can send to the above address or to the address I am enclosing with this letter. [all three of the above appear to be same, as there is only one address listed in the letter.]
...
The Craft Yarn Council of America has a web site for you future use."
At the bottom she apologizes for taking so long to reply.
I am more frustrated than before, but I do appreciate some response, inaccurate as it is. They seem to have their shit all mixed up. I'm glad I didn't send hats. I mean, who knows where they would have lost them? hahaha. I do think it's a good program and hope to participate when, A. they get their shit together and B. they produce a nationwide list of local places for people to drop donations off. I will keep an eye on their mostly useless site, but for now this is closed. Maybe it's time for them to start asking people to help. I, for one, would love to put my computer background to use by compiling their database and linking it to their website. I'm sure a couple others across the country, myself included, would be happy to incquire at a LYS or two to see if they will accept donations. But, whatever, they are hard to communicate with.
No response from the volunteer center about knitting/crocheting hats/mittens for the elderly. At this point I don't expect one.
I will continue with snuggles, hope to start some bear outfits soon, perhaps complete a few Warm Up America squares, and will pick up with project linus over summer vacay. I think project linus is an awesome program but if I need to complete a whole afghan it just won't happen until I have a month or two off school. Poo :/

Dog Sweater
12 November, 2004, 11:53 pm
I'm working away on the dog sweater, but I have to stop often. I don't know if my carpal tunnel syndrome has any effect, but my wrist gets so sore. I don't know why these patterns are knit on straight needles. Maybe I'll figure out why after I finish it. At this point I'm only carrying perhaps 4 ounces of yarn..lol. My denise needles didn't come with a small enough tip to use (I knit quite loosely) and I hate to buy yet another circular. Especially after buying two sets of dpns for my mittens I swatched for yesterday.
Anyway, back to the sweater. There are many things I haven't done before. The first being M1 and M1P. I know YO and knitting into same loop twice, but these were new on me. I think I have them ironed out. They're on the chest part of the sweater so my holes shouldn't be too noticeable. Now we're onto the leg holes, where I needed to cast off twice in the middle of a row. That was new to me, as well, but a Yahoo! group member kindly explained to me. So, I'm to the point where I will be using three separate balls. I had to stop here so I can wind a skein into two separate balls. My next big question is when I'm back to one ball. I assume it's when I'm casting on to get the original number of stitches again, but it's not like they can be at all obvious about these things. I think I will have learned a lot by the time I'm done with this sweater. I'm trying to struggle through as much as possible without asking questions, to boost my confidence.
It was frosty today, I had to scrape, all the while wishing my mittens were done. Then I walked the dogs with my mother and my ears got cold, prompting wistful thinking of the hat to go with the mittens.
Oh, and the fuzzy feet have been adopted, I mean, stolen, by my little brother. I found him sleeping with them on this morning.
School is getting ugly.. I'll be around.

Fuzzy Feet
11 November, 2004, 09:49 am
My fuzzy feet are finished. They are sort of, er, ugly. The koolaid ran a bit in the wash so I'm guessing it didn't set. I don't think I want to try dying again anytime soon. I would have liked to felt them a bit more but the length is as short as it can go.
This is my wool from Elann.com. That was fast. Now I can start my hat and mittens.
Another beef. I emailed the volunteer center four days ago after reading the article in the newspaper about knitting hats & mittens. Do you think they responded yet? No. I don't understand why people ask you to donate the three T's (time, treasure, talent), give you a mailing address or emailing address, and then ignore incoming mail. That is just plain RUDE.
I need some chocolate.
