LYS
27 December, 2004, 10:30 pm
So I went in search of a replacement for the size 11s my dog ruined. First I hit the department store in a neighboring town and came out empty-handed. I was going to wait till I got to GB again but as I made my way home from dropping my brother off at his girlfriend's I drove past our new LYS. Duh. They have a suitable needle selection and I found what I needed. Along with two more balls of Paton's Kroy Socks. Just what I need. Yarn for another pair of socks. (Pair #4 of unstarted socks, if anyone's counting.) But it was only 3.25 a ball. I think I paid 4 or 5 at the other yarn shop. The color selection wasn't all there but I found a dark pink sort of salmony color. Now to start a pair..heh. Oh, they have a drop box for handmade goodies that will be delivered to the domestic violence women/family shelter. Oo-lala. I think I will leave my two hats in there and hopefully make something more fun to put in there. There were already some very pretty scarves in the bin.
I taught my mom to cast on and knit today. She's a quick one and can tell when something's not right. For now that means catching me but.. I think purling is next. I wanted to let her go at her own pace. We're starting with a dishcloth. I couldn't decide but figured that was a small project and even if it contains boo-boos it will still be useable.

Merry Christmas
26 December, 2004, 09:02 pm
A belated merry Christmas to any readers! Hope it was lovely for everyone. I think mine was about perfect. We even had snow.
I received a very nice selection of gifts. The knitting related is a calendar - Simple Knits, or something. It has some pretty off the wall things but I like the table runner, felted purse, place mats, and the potholders/trivets. The thing I don't like is the instructions come on separate sheets of paper. I suppose that's good because you can't exactly use the calendar and the instructions at the same time, but I can picture myself losing or damaging them easily. I wanted to start with placemats, but each requires Reynolds Morocco at.. gasp.. like 10 bucks a ball at a ball per placemat. (As in 40 bucks per small set.) I will try to find a substitute and keep my eyes open for a deal at the same time. I did really want to try linen so I will hold off till I find something. If not, maybe I can wait until I have a full time job that leaves me a little bigger knitting budget..lol.
My dearest dog ate my Denise Interchangeable size 11 that I was using to make my brother's afghan. I was.. bothered. You would think I'd have learned my lesson after she ate the crochet hook, but no.. That's the only reason I like metal needles. Anywho, after starting his afghan I realized it would probably take the better part of my summer vacation to finish, so I dug out a pamphlet of quick & easy afghans and asked him to choose one. It's made of doubled worsted in a navy color with bone as the contrasting. It looked like color work to me but looking at the pattern it seems slipped stitches do the work (?). I still want to make the other afghan but it will wait. My brother's will wait, too, until I can get to Green Bay for a new set of circulars. I think I can have this finished by his birthday, less than a week.
Oh, I finished a fourth warm up america square. The middle of my leftover Encore Colorspun had a knot. I was so mad. At 5 or so dollars a ball, that's a splurge for me..haha. To pay that much and have a knot. I always use cheap acrylic and the only time I've ever had a knot in the midst of a skein was some chenille that was mill ends from eBay. Gah. I'm debating complaining to the company. I'm afraid they'll request the ball.. and I just crocheted that knot right into my square. Um, character, I call it.. mostly because I'm too new at crocheting to try to cut the yarn and join a new piece in the middle of my work.
My mom wants to learn to knit! Tomorrow! She's been dropping hints but I wasn't sure she was serious until she mentioned she would wait until "after Christmas." Then her horror-scope said she should be doing creative work with her hands tomorrow..lol. She knew how to crochet at one point. She said it makes holy work and she thought knitting looked less holy. I understand completely, but I'm learning to see the benefits of each. I still like knitting better, but I like how you can make a chain ...

socks & dishclothes
17 December, 2004, 11:23 pm
Swatched for my socks and my brother's present. I went back to the LYS inbetween finals today and bought needles for the ripple socks. That owner is so friendly and bubbly.. It's nice early in the morning when not so many people are there. As I may have mentioned it's almost bursting with yarn so you have to say "excuse me" a lot. I also finished my second Warm Up America! square. I definitely like the Encore one better, but my Mary Maxim was cheaper at a buck a ball.. and it goes faster as a chunky knit.
I picked up the Easy Knitting while I was there. I'm assuming that just came out? I've been checking Wal-mart and the Barnes & Noble for it and all they've had are the previous issue. I didn't look through it very well but I did like the cable-y purse/bag. I've never done cables before and I'm always ready for a chance to learn a new knit-thing. Not that I need another bag I don't use. But if it turns out well I'd like to enlarge it and use it for a knit tote-y bag.
I decided instead of making three panels as instructed for my brother's present, it will be one large thing. I'm afraid my tension will differ among the three and come out oddly shaped, plus I have a fear of joining when all the rows need to match up perfectly. I'm going to type the pattern up row-by-row so I can cross things off as I go. I need this all worked out ahead of time since it's turning out to be such a complicated thing. There are 5 patterns in all, each spanning a different number of rows, and each of the 3 panels has a combination of the 5 different patterns. It looks great but the instructions must be explicitly written out to minimize my booboos and frustration. (Y'know, for row 18 work row 5 of pattern 1, row 2 of pattern 3, row 4 of pattern 5, row 3 of pattern 2, row 1 of pattern 4). For all I know I'll still be working on his Christmas present in summer.
I did something bad. Very bad. Two bags of yarn are sitting in my car. This liquidator had a sign up. "New shipment of yarn. .69-1.59" I didn't have time but I _had_ to stop. It's all acrylic except a cotton blend. All worsted. Two skeins of Red Heart's Fiesta, one or two Redheart Cotton Twist, and 12 balls of a yellow acrylic I've never heard of before. I think it'll make a nice blankie for a young child. If I ever get around to it. I need more yarn like a hole in the head. But I'm sure you all understand that, right? So now I _really_ need to get busy this winter break. Anywho, I touched all of it carefully before buying and it feels soft enough (definitely not supersaver-calibre). So two bags of yarn ran me 13 bucks. I didn't bother asking if they carry yarn all the time. I don't really need to make that a regular stop, by any means. They even have the Redheart Soft. I really wanted to try that but I resisted the urge.. I think that's discontinued or something. In any event, very hard to find.

Yarn n stuff
10 December, 2004, 12:36 am
10th of December and I've received 3 of the 8 dishclothes I speak of. Not to be impatient or whiny, but where are they? *whines* One mentioned hers might be late, but the other 4 mentioned nothing. I'm not even sure if they're still alive..hehe. Actually, the three I've receieved from and the one that said she might be late are the only people posting on the list, so for all I know the others have dropped off the face of the earth. What is proper etiquette? Wait and wait? Ask the listmom? Ask the people that have yet to be received or heard from? *shrugs*
Yesterday I went to the LYS when I should have been doing homework but I needed to do something relaxing, and feeling yarn is one of my favorites.. I bought two balls of Patons Kroy Sock yarn in a light gray and I intend to make the Broadripple Socks on Knitty. First glance says the gauge called for should be about the gauge of the yarn I got, but I need to swatch. I hope I have the required needles flying around here somewhere..
But I'm not starting those until I finish the dog sweater. I also wanted to finish the mittens first, but I could not find bulky in a navy blue. How disappointing. I'm toying with ordering some Rowan Plaid (the most expensive yarn I've ever considered for anything..hehe) but every site selling it shows the colors differently and I want it to match :/ Next stop is the handpaintedyarns site (more affordable, and I know their yarn is yummy). Anywayyyy.. first I'm finishing the spikes and spots for the dinosaur dog sweater. I found my place last night and started the second row of spikes, which I hope to finish tonight. Hopefully I can finish the spots over the weekend. I think I should have left the ends out so I could have stitiched the two rows of spikes together with them, but either the pattern said to weave them in or I made an executive decision that was B.S. (bad solution). Oh well.

Knitty
6 December, 2004, 11:27 pm
Bah, I'm supposed to be in bed but I just found out the Knitty issue is out. Ack, I dunno if the antihistab is making me odd or what, but there are a few things I need to make. Those being the cute penguin, the odd, odd womb, and perhaps mariah. I dislike zippers from my short sewing days and I've never knit a garment so I'm not too sure about that one. It's close to my dream picture of a wrap cardigan and best, it's freeee. I suppose I could make it longer, add some ribbing where the zipper should be, and knit a belt thingy. That doesn't sound too hard, does it? *cough*

Dishclothes & Winter Plans
5 December, 2004, 10:55 pm
Weeeee! I received two(!) dishclothes, one at the P.O. awaiting further postage and one right to my door. They're both the multi colored variegated yarn. One is so very soft, I'm waiting to hear what brand of yarn that would be.. The other is a granny square, methinks. I have yet to make one of those but I intend to try one soon. The second is something like a basket weave. Both are lovely, and much closer to the required size than mine..heh..heh..
So I've been warned about how few hours I will be getting in January and February and since I won't be in school the better part of January, I'm making a mental list of things I wish to accomplish. Most are yarn related.. like, cleaning my room..heheh.
1. My brother's Xmas present.
2. Mittens of bulky wool for myself.
3. Dog's dinosaur sweater.
4. Crochet ripple afghan.
5. Figure out granny squares.
6. (10) Warm Up America squares.
7. Cubs for Kids outfit.
8. (2) pair of socks. (I'm sure you all understand that while I _have_ the yarn for both pairs, I'm shopping for more just in case I decide to make three pair)
9. Use up ball ends, mill ends, crusty acrylic. I suspect most of #7 will turn into Snuggles.
The socks should be interesting. My first and only pair was worsted weight and that was slow enough for me. The yarn for both the others is real sock yarn - one ball of blue-ish Magic Stripes and two balls of rainbow-ish Regia. I'm still debating if I should stocking stich them or try something more fun. I want to try a pattern but I think it will get swallowed in the self-striping.. so is it worth it? Plus that leaves mindless knitting for movie watching.. Hum. Maybe I should buy boring sock yarn so I can try a pattern..hehe.

Dishclothes
2 December, 2004, 10:27 pm
Okay, yesterday was the last day to mail dishclothes for the exchange. That means any day now 7 should roll in. Does that sound greedy? Only one person responded to let me know they received mine. Is that weird? I hope to join another exchange over summer. Looks like I'll be spending the whole of this month-long winter break knitting my brother's Christmas present..hahaha. I almost started the other night. I finally came across the pattern again while I was cleaning for Thanksgiving.. He's seen the yarn already but I doubt he suspects anything with all the yarn I've laying around my room..
I crocheted one Warm Up America square and started another. I need to finish one row of spikes and the duplicate stitched spots for my dog's sweater. I think I'll frog the mitten and start anew when I decide on yarn for a bulkier pair. I'd like a navy blue with some subtle coloring but I don't know what I'll find. Is it just my imagination or are there less options in the bulky er, mode? I think I will hit my LYS for that so I can match colors easier. The only problem is I feel obligated to buy things when I go in there - not like big stores where you go in and out unnoticed. Not to say that finding something to buy is hard, but pinching pennies still.
