Warm Up America     6 January, 2005, 01:22 pm
I joined some dishcloth exchange groups, we'll see what happens. I knit two dishcloths yesterday. One is an odd rectangle as I ran out of yarn and wasn't about to buy anew when I'm trying to use my collection.

Speaking of stash.. while cleaning my room I found 8 unopened skeins and receipts to accompany them so they went back to the store. I would still like to knit what I intended to knit with them, but they've fallen so far down the list of knit-priorities that I don't believe it will happen within the year.

I completed my 5th Warm Up America rectangle, which puts me at the halfway point of my goal. So far they're all crocheted. And I realized I've been doing the stitch wrong and switched midway through this last square so it's an interesting one. Also, they're all curling.

Pictures coming soon.

Meetup, etc.     6 January, 2005, 09:01 am
Aw man, we lost a member, one of the "active" ones too. *whine* Too bad it gives no reason for departure.

Ah, and then I was wandering around in the Crochet groups and noticed my local one still has no organizer. Meetup automatically cancels all further meetups until someone takes the position. So I did. Maybe I can pawn it off on someone when we get new members.

I finished the second repeat of my brother's afghan. My mom and I did the math and there's 4 and a half repeats. That strikes me as odd. I guess they were shooting for size.

My mom finished her dishcloth. It is trapezoidal. She sounded pretty discouraged so I was worried she'd give up. But I came home and found a new ball of yarn on the table. Yay. She's going to try a potholder to iron out the sneaky increases. I never had the issue so I really didn't know what to tell her, except to count stitches after every row. I was more likely to lose one and end up with a hole..

Meetup     4 January, 2005, 06:35 pm
I fired off my email begging members to basically be active. I asked them mark their RSVP for two current events and also check out the message board. I'm waiting anxiously. So far nothing. No new RSVPs.. no new posts on the message board.. no emails.. I did learn about a cool new feature on Meetup.com. It gives a vague idea of when members were active last. Six of our group of 11 are inactive. That explains a lot, methinks. I feel like I'm failing. You would think with 11 members we could get say, 3 of us, to agree on a time and a place. Bah.

The shop in town is having a one year anniversary/birthday party on Saturday. I work so I don't think I'll be going. But in the newletter was a calendar. Every Friday is marked "yarn social." Hmm? Sounds interesting. I think I need to call one of these days and get some details.

animals.     2 January, 2005, 02:15 pm
This is off-topic. Please skip ahead if it bothers you :)

I'm sorry to keep taking this out on any visitors I may have, but I recently realized we produce 70 million(!) puppies and kittens each year. How many of those are unwanted? Probably the majority. Please, please, please.. if you add any new pets to your household this year, have them spayed or neutered. If money is an issue, give your local humane society a jingle. They may be able to offer you low-cost or even FREE spay/neuter vouchers.

This is er, pessimistic, but I wish those irresponsible people that allow their animals to reproduce "accidentally" would have the courtesy to euthanize their unwanted puppies and kittens from the start. As it is, they often end up on the street suffering. Many eventually make it to a humane society where some lucky few are chosen for a good home. The rest, having only known suffering, are euthanized before ever experiencing the good life.

..and all it would have taken is a routine surgical procedure..

Chocolate Crinkles, Tote Bags, Mittens, and Magazines     2 January, 2005, 01:58 pm
I'm killing time while waiting for a batch of Chocolate Crinkles to chill. The recipe comes from my Christmas present from my brother and SIL. I've been reading blogs, checking out new year's resolutions, all that kinda stuff.

I decided I want to sew myself a tote bag for knitting use. I have one from my place of employment and I want to make the cable bag from Family Circle's Easy Knitting magazine. Yet I need another..? Well, no. But my sewing machine is gathering dust. I also wanted something more personalized. I hope to find an animal pattern or yarn pattern of some sort on some calico. The plan is to insert batting between the calico and muslin (or other solid color) to make it a little sturdier. Is this realistic? I'm not sure. I haven't sewn in quite a few months and I never made it past beginner level. There are a number of free patterns on the 'net that I'm still picking through.

I was just inspired by someone's pair of finished mittens, which reminded me of my own freakish mitten. I can't decide on yarn. I need bulky- which limits colors quickly. I just realized two strands of worsted (or worsted & sock yarn? I dunno.) might be suitable. I want something multicolored but not too wild. Maybe I can find a plain blue that coordinates with something more interesting..

No further progress on the afghan. We've been on the move lately so I've been taking the scarf along. It's just over two feet. The pattern is straight knit rows alternating with a purl-knit rib row. The pattern picture doesn't show it curling but it certainly does. I'm debating on the fringe, and also considering a border to help stop the curl. Both are new on me and I have no idea how to allocate yarn. So his birthday was Friday and it wasn't done, but he didn't seem to mind.

I just found out about the uber-cheap magazine subscriptions to be had on eBay, thanks to a blog. I had been refusing to subscribe so that I can go to the bookstore and find the magazine that has the most patterns I like, but at this price I can get 6 mags for the price of two. I am now the proud owner of a one year subscription for Creative Knitting Magazine. Debating a crochet magazine, but we'll see how things go on that front.

New Year     1 January, 2005, 05:32 pm
Happy new year! Hope it brings you all good things. That resolution thing is overrated but I do have two goals.

1. Cut my stash in half and organize the rest.

2. Make my first garment.

I'm working on the first and will work on the second as soon as I find the perfect piece..ahem.

I recently realized I have less than 3 weeks of my break left and I've not started the first pair of socks, much less the second. The afghan is not even half done. But I do have 4 and a half squares done..

Did anyone pick up that Afghans magazine? I hear it's an annual. I was quite surprised to find it at the store where I work. Lately we've been getting 2 or 3 knit/crochet magazines and this happened to be one of them. I bought it without looking through it. There's a few afghans I like, but many strike me as.. well.. ugly. Part of it is the bright garish color choices. I was surprised not all projects came with color pictures. That stinks, especially when there's only 50 of them. Well anyway, we're not starting any of those anytime soon but.. :)

Pictures     29 December, 2004, 11:36 am
Finally some pictures.. thanks to my dad's flash card :) Mine is still um, missing.

This is the scarf I started for the violence center. The yarn, Bernat Denimstyle, was originally meant for socks. I decided that probably wasn't a good idea. I really like how it's turning out and it will be hard to give up.

This is my brother's Christmas present. I finished row 48 of 222 and the rest is repeats. I like how this is turning out as well, but the back will be a mess. Not to mention all those ends to be woven in. The bottom edge that's curling is to be folded under and "hemmed." There's eyelets there so it will form a scallopy thing.

My aunt stopped in yesterday and I actually got to talk knitting with someone. She admired the things I had laying around. (eek) Until now she's only done scarfs, I believe. They have a neat thing going at work. They meet over lunch hour to knit and go back to their tasks feeling refreshed.

My mother is making progress. There are still holes. I think she gets distracted and forgets where she's at, so she guesses and, tada. I think her only goal at this point is to get good enough by the time my brother and sister in law start making babies such that she can knit baby blankets. I'm plotting to turn her onto much more than that.. (insert cackle).

I've heard from others in the dishcloth exchange and they have only received one or two, so I'm actually pretty well off. We are wrapping it up and one or two still intend to mail theirs. The others apparently died. If not, they are being incredibly rude. I understand things happen, but I think it would be common courtesy to take five minutes and let people know that you won't be coming through with your obligations. That's the least you can do when people are putting time and effort into a handcrafted piece, which, to top it off, has to be mailed to you. Huff.

Now that the holidays are almost over, I'm excited to fire off some emails to the meetup group and have another go at getting people together. It will be easier on my end for the month of January as I don't have classes. I only hope it's a good time for everyone else. I think I better wait till next week when the new years celebrations have tapered. I hope to get some topics going on the message boards to suck people in. Any suggestions?

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
