Bad Emily!     28 January, 2005, 06:39 pm
So I went to the LYS to drop off my scarf and the two Caps for Kids (that weren't CfK) and OF COURSE I had to buy something. A ball of magic stripes and a ball of Wool-ease. At least it was only two balls and I really like both. The Wool-ease I think will be a hat for the domestic violence center if I get it finished before winter's over.. The magic stripes will be socks if I ever get that far. Their yarn social is tonight but my 10 hour killer headache from yesterday is back and I'm kinda harried from work. Next week..

Questions. Questions. I don't like straight acrylic. Wool makes me itch. I want a soft yummy scarf that looks nice and might be warm. What do I make it out of? Fun Fur is absolutely not an option. Anyone? Anyone? I like chenille but in my limited experience it sheds. I dunno what else is out there..?

I'm throwing up a swap/sale page including my yarn, if anyone's interested. Hopefully finish it up this weekend.

Lion Brand, Grr!     25 January, 2005, 09:04 am
I started my cable tote from FCEK and the first ball of Wool-Ease chunky had 3 splicings and a knot. The email reply from Lion Brand said if this was more problems than I'd normally expect I should send the yarn samples and they would replace the yarn with Lion Brand products that may not be the same color/dye lot, may not be the same product.

Just what I need, to waste my time and postage sending a ball of yarn so I can receive a ball of Fun Fur and go buy a replacement of what I really need.

So what I'm wondering, is what you would do. Do you consider it a problem or is splicing normal in skeins? I can definitely understand splicings and knots when I'm buying mill ends at a discount, but full price yarn?

I'm also mad at myself. I went to a bit of a higher end yarn shop between classes. I really wanted a ball of Opal but they only had two colors. I also priced Noro Kureyon. I'm one of those odd people that can't walk out without buying anything so I settled on two balls of Regia cotton. They were, uh, 8.50 each. That's 18 dollars on two tiny balls of yarn. I really like the yarn but I don't think it's worth that much and now I'm just frustrated with myself. I will feel better when it's either stashed away or used.

I've come to the conclusion that buying yarn on the Internet is almost always cheaper, and when it's not, it doesn't get anymore expensive. At least for the stuff I can't find at Wal-mart and my very-LYS. The yarn shops in Green Bay tend to be expensive, although the staff are very friendly and they have the added benefit of classes and yarn "feeling." :)

I made a bit of progress on my Broad Ripple socks between classes. Yummy. But I still get bored. I need to find some headphones or something.

Stuff     23 January, 2005, 01:23 pm
Apologies. I'm not really all that creative when it comes to titles.

We got a boatload of snow. I'd venture to say 12 inches judging by what I shoveled, but I've heard no official number. I like snow, especially when I don't need to be anywhere and I can wait until noon to brush the car off.

Anyway, I finished the scarf for the domestic violence center. I decided no fringes, no borders. Maybe someone will appreciate its curly nature.

I found Noro Kureyon for just under 6 bucks a ball, which is a lot cheaper than eBay, too bad shipping is so expensive.

Mom & RAOK     21 January, 2005, 10:20 am
Did I mention my mom is purling? Without any problems whatsoever. I'm so proud. It looks like she purls easier than I do..lol. After a lovely Trivet we're onto a dishcloth, stacked barrels is the pattern. It looks a bit like the basketweave to me. Maybe they just needed a new name so they could print it in a book and copywrite it..hehe. She wanted to make a hat but decided she should purl first. Maybe next..

Anyone else get an email from the RAOK ring? Soon after I removed the ring code thinking it would be forever/never until I got in, I got an email saying they were approving sites that had the code in place and she would be back next week checking everyone again. So I dutifully put my code back and waited until the next week. Which was a week or two ago. *yawn*

I need to rearrange the side but notice the Dishcloth Boutique link? Go there. Tons of knit and crochet patterns, all free, most with pictures.

Reynolds Morocco Compromise     20 January, 2005, 09:43 pm
Eh. The cheapest I could come up with is 5.70/skein which comes out to 30 dollars with shipping. I wanted to make the placemats from the Simple Knits calendar. I can't spend 30 bucks on four placemats. :-o So, I've decided I will get one skein of linen or a linen-cotton blend and find something else for the placemats. At least this way I can try it out on a dishcloth or something just for the experience, and still have my placemats.

I got to start my Broad Ripple socks from Knitty inbetween classes. I like. I haven't made it past the top little cuff yet, though. I'm using Paton Kroy Socks in a grayish color.

I was surprised to receive a speedy reply from Caron thanking me for alerting them of my problems and asking me to let them know of any further issues. Neato. That's a pretty cool attitude.

Boo     18 January, 2005, 04:42 pm
No sock-knitting today. The first day of school and I've been lambasted with 2 books to read in a month. What? This computer science major does not know the meaning of "read the book". (Not to mention I only went to 2 classes and am already aware of 3 group projects over the next semester.)

I did take time out to buy 3 balls of Wool-Ease Chunky, which, to my dismay, was 5 dollars a ball! 80% acrylic no less. Had I known that I would have scoured Elann more carefully. I know, I know, that's not the most outrageous yarn anyone's bought..hehe. It's just not fitting into my penny-pinching budget very well. I'll be starting the cabley bag from FCEK.

I sent a short email to Caron letting them know of my knotting problems in recent skeins of Simply Soft. I didn't leave my address so I don't really expect a response. For the price and quality of Simply Soft I've been really pleased, so this is not enough to turn me off. Unless of course it becomes commonplace but.. :)

I sewed the spikes on the languishing dog sweater and then went right into duplicate stitching. I think I must have been doing it wrong because it looked pretty bad. Before I try again I need to look for a different diagram.

Afghan!     17 January, 2005, 10:24 am

Um.. toward the end of weaving in the ends I got lazy and started holding both strands together to weave them in. I warned my mother to wash is delicately if they're going that route. The edge with all the ends is slightly stiff and misshapen..heh. If I did it over I would definitely be carrying up the side.

Tomorrow my second-last semester starts. My dad is on my case about finding a job that pays more or gives me more hours such that I can start saving in case I need to relocate for a job. I almost laughed in his face. There is nothing around here, unless I can get an internship. Being able to knit makes calming the nerves a bit easier. It also spurs cleaning and I returned 7 balls of yarn yesterday to stores. Woohoo. I'm turning into a chronic returner here. Michaels would only give me a card since the yarn was 3 months old so of course I had to go shopping right away. I bought some soap molds and coloring, and the knifty knitter loom set. I want to send soaps along with my dishcloths. ..and the knifty knitter loom I intended to knit quick easy hats for charity and use up some of that yarn.

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
