KnitPicks review
Both entertaining and educational.

addendum to yesterday     10 February, 2005, 11:52 am
Don't go buying that temptingly cheap $127 camera on wal-mart.com without visiting epinion.com first. What? Yes, I was reading reviews. If I were to buy one now I would get the Canon Powershot A400. What's that? Why yes, my first tax refund was deposited early this morning but I will not touch it. WILL NOT touch it.. will not touch it.. will not touch it.. And it's just enough to cover the camera, memory card reader, and memory card.. will not touch it.. will not touch it.. but they come in such fun colors.. not touching it.

Apparently the merino is a light worsted or dk weight. Silly me. I assumed I could double that and get worsted. I think I will double it anyway and get a bit bulkier rather than leave half that lovely merino lying around waiting for another project.

Next on the agenda is to print out Mariah and decide on yarn. I finished my first two large assignments of the semester and only work 4 hours this weekend so that should leave time to get a good start on my Irish Hiking Scarf.

digital cameras and pictures     9 February, 2005, 11:52 am
Ohhh boy. Wal-mart has a shitload of cheap cameras that look semi-decent. $127 for a 3.2 mp camera with 3x digital and 2.8x optical zoom that only eats 2 batteries at a time? $135 brings you your choice of 3 or 4 cameras with similar specs. Ugh.

But anyway, here are pictures.

See the boo-boo?
Here's the good side :) This is the FCEK cable tote bag in Evergreen Wool-Ease Chunky (that yarn I was whining about with the knots n such). It is actually a bit darker than pictured.

And here is my yummy merino.. dusk colored..

As you can see I have yet to start the Irish Hiking Scarf..

yarn, yarn, yarn!     7 February, 2005, 11:43 pm
Steals and deals all over. Did you see littleknits.com ? Gosh! My merino arrived from knitpicks.com the same day I finished my tote. It took just a couple days to ship. I was surprised. It feels reallly nice but isn't quite the color I was hoping for. I was planning to swatch tonight but I ended up drooling at yarn pictures instead. I also want to try some of knit picks' sock yarn but I have enough sock yarn and I'm trying to lay off. Grr. Why must they tempt with sweet deals?

Picture next time if the camera cooperates. It is going to be so tempting to replace that one when I get tax returns. Eek. I also received my last dishcloth from the exchange. I'm still missing just a couple but at 2 months over due, I expect no more :) Anyway, I think the new exchange I joined will be much more successful. Everyone exchanges with one person so it's not a big responsibility and it doesn't stray over a number of months.

Disappointments     4 February, 2005, 09:53 pm
..mostly my own fault. I haven't gotten to work on my sock since Monday, or was it last week? Too restless to stay on campus inbetween classes. I haven't gotten to finish the cable tote. I sort of forgot about homework so I've only finished one handle and just barely started the second. I missed the yarn social again because we went to visit my grandparents and I decided to tag along. Next week I can't go because I have to work. Bring out the fiddles, I'm whining again.

To do in the next 24 hours:
weave in ends of exchange dishcloth and mail off
finish bag

Maybe we can avoid disappointment this way :)

Caps For Kids     2 February, 2005, 06:50 pm
Is anyone else not surprised the the Craft Yarn Council of America does not have the promised database up? January of 05 was the due date. Maybe it's time to ask for help? I could use an intership integrating database and website.. heh.. heh.

Oh, the cable tote bag from FCEK is almost finished. I need to do the handles and attach them, then whip stitch the bottom. It's going down tonight. And then I'll have a picture, if anyone cares. I found another knot in the second ball of Wool-Ease Chunky but since it was only one I didn't bother.. we'll see what the third ball brings.

Yes, more yarn. Grr-me. I went to Michaels to check out crochet classes so I could get further faster and ended up with a ball of Homespun for a 1-ball scarf for the DVC. The posted classes won't fit in my schedule. They're only 10 bucks for 2 hours, plus supplies.. which I'm sure I'd have already..lol.

Stash & Links     1 February, 2005, 09:10 am
Oops. I was bad again. I was doing so well before that sock yarn. Yesterday one of my professors didn't show up so a 3 hour break turned into a 5 hour break and I just happened to have the directions to Jane's Knitting Hutch printed out. I brought 4 balls of lovely alpaca home with the intent of making the Irish Hiking Scarf that was ever so popular. It is sport weight rather than worsted but alpaca is supposed to be warmer than wool so I figured it mattered not. The problem is I assumed the dye lots were all the same. Last 4 balls, must be of the same lot, no? No. At least one was from 2002 and at least one was from 2004. Holding them next to each other, I can see the difference. Duh. It took me so long to decide..too..lol. Now I have six balls of merino on the way from Knit Picks. Agh!

Oh, I also went for some nubby cotton chenille and boucle on eBay. For what it's worth, don't go deal finding. You're bound to find something you never knew you wanted at a decent price. My new tactic is to start this new month recording all the money I spend on everything. From there I intend to develop a yarn budget. Hopefully that will make me more careful and less impulsive. We'll see.

Jane's Knitting Hutch.. ah. If you're in the area (Appleton, WI) go there. It's a neat atmosphere. Everything is all crammed onto shelves in a small space. I have two beefs. The first being that much of the stuff I looked at isn't marked in any way. Some things had a sign posted, others had price stickers, most had neither. For someone on a budget, it's a pain to keep asking how much this or that is. Next, the stuff was on the shelf in a way that most of the same type of yarn was together, but not according to color. If you scrounged around long enough you could maybe find another ball buried under the others kind of thing. The owner(?) was of my favorite type.. asking if you need anything and then slipping away to leave you alone to fondle and look wistful. They also have a card much like the subway card. Buy enough and you get $20 of free merchandise. They had a lot of the higher end stuffs, Debbie Bliss, Rowan, Noro.. but the prices didn't seem too outrageous.

Side link update. Yay, Handknitters' Blogs got two members over the weekend! One of the older members seems to have dropped us off her site, though. No one is responding to my Meetup emails. I give up. I will continue to post events but if no one responds, no one responds. The RAOK ring was supposed to be approving everyone 3 or so weeks ago. An email over the weekend mentioned she would do it Sunday. Didn't happen. I give it two weeks and then the ring code is coming down again. Ah, and the swap page is up.

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
