I went to the sort-of LYS with my book. She didn't have the yarn suggested, but said it was just a fingering weight baby yarn. She sent me off with Dreambaby Fingering..which feels lovely. It shows 7spi and the yarn called for was 8.5 spi. We'll gauge and see what happens. The LYSO thought it might take forever to knit. That sort of crossed my mind, but I figure I have all summer. Oh, I also bought cascade fixation in a marbly blue for the Pretty Comfy socks. Some day..
I finished my first Broadripple sock. Er, stayed up way past my bedtime to do it. It feels great. I did a 3 needle bindoff, lovin' it. Won't be doing kitchener on toes anytime soon. I used it for a bookmark as one of the ladies mentioned she wanted to see my work. Well, she wasn't there, but the owner dutifully admired it for me. I cast on for the second but..
The yarn for my sock swap buddy's socks arrived today! Woo. She has mine done.. for like a week already. Best get knitting. I was debating patterns but I picked this one because it has 64 stitches, which she suggested would fit her, and has the same gauge as the ball band suggests. I also think it looks neat..hehe. As soon as I find my needles I will swatch, wash, and start. Fortunately I don't work much this weekend so maybe I can get a sock done.
Oh, the pictures are definitely coming tonight, not that they are anything exciting. Gotta get them off the memory card.

Babies
3 April, 2005, 00:24 am
Urgh, there are still pictures waiting on the camera. One of these days..
My mom has been looking at patterns trying to decide what to knit next. Well, instead of finding something for her, she suggested I make it. Ha..ha. Anyway, it's a lacy piece that could be used for baptism. At first I was like, no, that's too weird. (Personal thing, I don't believe, why would I want to knit a special piece for someone that does? Y'know?) But the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. They know my position. I think this would be a neat way to show them that I understand, admire, and support their beliefs, despite not sharing them. I do need to think a bit more on it. It's a little more complicated than what I've done before. I read through the pattern, the yoke is a hang-up. I suppose once I got there I'd be able to picture it. It also uses three different needle sizes..? Plus, I told myself I wouldn't hand knit gifts that they would feel obligated to use if they didn't like them. I dunno..

Thanks, mom!
1 April, 2005, 11:36 am
She wove all the ends in for my Snuggles, a stack of 8 or 9. I hate-hate-hate weaving ends. Now they can be washed and delivered!
Past the heels and gusset and onto the foot on the ripple socks. I'm beginning to wonder if I will have enough yarn, although I got the suggested 2 balls. Fortunately that makes me knit faster, 'cause I like to know ASAP if I need to find a third ball, y'know?
Patterworks catalog arrived. Lovely for drooling, but I couldn't help adding up prices.
Pattern: $4-5
Yarn: $5-10/ball @ 8-10 balls
Total: around $68 for a sweater
My mom was eyeballing a baby bathrobe - $63, not including the book ($12) the pattern came from!
I understand how people can pay these prices, and if I wasn't in my current position, I'd be able to at least consider it. It's more than a garment, it's the joy you get from knitting it. The garment's almost a by-product..lol. I suppose it is worth it, but for a good chunk of us I suppose we'll continue to go the generic or discounted route. That's fun in itself, too.. shopping for a bargain? Mhm.

a baby?
28 March, 2005, 09:49 pm
Agnes, I'm using Lion Brand's Pound of Love for Mariah.
I'm going to be an aunt. I've known for a bit but I had sworn secrecy. There you have it. Now I have a baby to knit for! Too bad I'm off my baby-knittin' kick.
I have good news. I can't find any tablecloth patterns that strike me as something I'd like to spend hours and hours and hours on. They're all crochet. Shucky darn.
The new Creative Knitting arrived. I was disappointed at all the ponchos, wraps, and furry scarves. Hello? Summer? I like the towel borders. I think that's it, but I haven't spent much time with it yet. Oh, and a tank-top sort of strapped sweater-y thing. Sorry, I don't really like clothes and have no knowledge. In any event, I don't wear things like that so..
Today's weather was absolutely beautiful. It shouldn't be long until I can knit in the park or in the garden at school.

Mariah, etc.
26 March, 2005, 11:31 pm
I pulled out the pattern and read over it. Uh oh. This would be the project I currently have yarn for. I've never done a charted pattern before. I believe this would be a good thing to learn, but not now. I gather it will be pushed off until summer. Any week now I should be getting more hours at work while we near the end of the semester, and that spells trouble. I need small projects I can knit a few rows on at the end of the night when I'm half asleep and then put back down and neglect for a week, if need be. Darn. Ugh.
So what I want to make is a Knitting Pure & Simple pattern that would take about 7 balls of Wool-ease or other similar yarn. But I really can't be spending any more money. (Is this tune getting old yet?) I've spent so much on knitting lately and I need to be saving. Why does this have to be so hard? ;) Oh, and I just wrote a check for the replacement Denise cables & needles I need. Maybe if they do a LB co-op again I could get the stuff dirt cheap. I should be getting 4 balls of Patons Kroy and 4 sets of DPNs all for 16 bucks. That means I can have 5 pairs of socks going all at once..*giggles* just what I need.
I guess that means socks & snuggles for as long as I can possibly handle it.
Hopefully the eyes and beaks get glued on the Cadbury chicks tomorrow. My mom heard my tale of woe about my brother eating the test egg and produced some for the Easter Bunny to leave for us :)

Lace Tablecloths
26 March, 2005, 02:41 pm
What the heck? Somebody talk me out of it. I have had the urge for the past couple of days to knit a big honkin' thing out of tiny tiny yarn. And I don't even have a table?
Continuing to put stash into spreadsheet. The hard part is finding it all. I'm up to 37 balls or something. That doesn't count the 4 and a half I've used on snuggles. :(
Pictures are still hanging out on the camera. I've been dying eggs and making Easter cut outs and the like.
A tad early, have a lovely Easter!

Cascade Fixation
24 March, 2005, 09:56 pm
I just came to a realization with those goofy socks. If you knit with the Cascade Fixation stretched, then when you measure your swatch it will be the shrunken version that can still expand. I don't know if I'm making sense, but this makes perfect sense to me. Of course, I didn't realize this until I had my Fixation out of the package and I was childishly stretching it and letting it relax repeatedly with obvious fascination. I will swatch, wash, and start these socks because I believe my swap buddy's socks will need to go on smaller needles. I'm psyched because I have a 3-day weekend. This ball of yarn is pastel colors that were made for Easter.
