Phew     16 June, 2005, 07:26 pm
Almost done with the first week and that's the hardest part. At least, that's what I'll be telling myself. Gotta find some more stuff to put in my cubicle. While the dogs' pictures are warm and fuzzy, they kinda just make you think more about being home..lol.

Not much on the knitting front. Two rows on the baby thing last night and a pattern repeat on the Project Linus blanky.

I bought the Fiber Trends Flower Basket Shawl pattern on eBay and sometime I gotta decide on a color for the yarn so I can order that. I suppose there's no hurry now that I'm not knitting much.. On that note, all the mail from my knitting groups is really piling up.

Oops     14 June, 2005, 08:06 am
Yes, Rebecca hit the nail on the head in last post's comment.

Orientation, right? Haha. At lunch they had our supervisors pick us up to eat in the cafe. I'm waiting and waiting for the Jewish man to pick me up but he doesn't arrive. You know that feeling? Like being last picked on the baseball team? Well, it wasn't nearly that bad, but I'm sure my face was slowly turning ugly. Surprise! Two other folks from a different interview I had show up for me. Huh? I will be working with them and not the Jewish man. This is good, this one will be more likely to get credit for school and that would wipe out a 15 page essay. But I feel foolishly unprepared. This one is a bit closer to the job I eventually hope to have. And more challenging. And I haven't looked at any of this stuff since December. They must have been desperate. They had three interviews and if they ended up with me, well... heheh. And it was great of them to tell me. (cough) It sort of seems like one of those big places that everyone expects someone to have done it, or something.

So I ran to the library before it closed last night and snatched a couple books. I hope today is more training so I can er, get a little further in my review. Anywho, it's in a different building. I guess I'll be working with a few people instead of by myself. It only takes 40 minutes instead of like 50 to get there. I have no clue if the pay rate changes or when it ends or anything like that. I feel stupid asking now. I don't even know which one is my "leader."

Waiting until I have a better understanding of what I'm doing and then hopefully I can harass my professor (he gave me permission to contact him during the summer, I promise!) for a paper to get credit.

Ah, no knitting last night :( Probably none tonight either :/

My First Day     12 June, 2005, 11:11 pm
Tomorrow I have orientation for my internship. I'm anxious. Er, that's sort of an understatement. Fortunately my parents kept me occupied today so I didn't have to think about it until tonight. As soon as I get off of here I will gather my stuff and try to sleep so I can get up nice and early. bleh.

The Yarn Coop group on Yahoo! is working on Mystical Creations. Drool worthy stuff. I won't give the details here, so you'll have to join the group. Basically it's discounted. You either have to order by the pound or find someone who will split the pound with you. I shouldn't be buying any yarn right now so I've compromised and will buy only if someone will split the pound with me. It's a good deal! The way I figure, I could get over 4 pairs of socks for less than 20 bucks. Quality, beautiful yarn, no less.

I cast on for the front of the baby thing today and worked a few rows in the car with my parents and aunt. Casting on and finishing are the hard parts for me so this part shouldn't take too long.

Oh! And Clyde is still alive! My dad informed me that I had mixed the names up. I also read they get skittish those first few days in their new home. Perhaps they don't know where coverage is so they take a flying leap. Silly critters.

What a day..     10 June, 2005, 11:05 pm
one of those where you're excited and exhausted all at the same time. I thought it would suck as I was home alone with my dad, but it went okay. Story time!

My dad set up his pond and we got a koi and a goldfish. I fed them and let them be until I was leaving for work and went to check on them. Surprise! No fishies in the pond. There was Bonnie, gasping at my feet. I scooped her up with a piece of cardboard and sent her back into the pond, but Clyde looked pretty fried already. I hate being anywhere near dead or dying animals, so that was quite a feat. Boy. I just read that they jump out of fear, which can be prevented by having enough plant coverage. Aha. So when Bonnie takes another dive, he doesn't plan to replace her. Aw.

Got to work and saw a purty vase of flowers with a Good Luck balloon attached and immediately decided someone else must be leaving, wonder who..? About 15 minutes later they called me to the service desk and surprise..lol. I feel so special. The two ladies I work with said they had to do a little something since I was such a hard worker.. *beams*

Not too much later a tornado warning was announced. Last time this happened the managers said not a word. I was pissed, to say the least. But our new managers are really uh, safety-minded. So we had an announcement and the customers were allowed to take shelter. What's even better? hehe. Last night there was a thunderstorm warning and they closed the store! I'm sorry I missed it. They had everyone up in tunnels n stuff.. getting tickled 'cause they couldn't buy their peanuts or whatnot.

Fast forward to five minutes before we close. One of my brother's in-laws drops a jar of corn syrup. I did feel bad for her, but felt worse for me. I scooped the excess off the floor with a halfa roll of paper towel and 20 minutes. Finally a neighboring department head relieved me of my duties and offered to get the mop bucket. I felt bad for leaving her there, but I was bursting at the seams with all the drama that had unfolded during this day. Not to mention she stays late like, every day.

OH! And I finished the back of the baby thing. All I need now is a front and two sleeves.. hehe.

Pictures     7 June, 2005, 01:43 pm
Feelin' a little like a slacker but here goes.. :)

Finished Irish Hiking Scarf. I used almost 4 balls of Knit Picks' Merino in Dusk.

Finished Broadripple socks. I used almost 2 balls of Cascade Fixation. One's a bit bigger than the other.

The start of my first socks on two circulars.

My "witch" socks, used less than two balls of a wool blend Regia something or other. They are a bit big although I got the suggested gauge on the pattern. I hope they'll shrink. I don't think I like the stockinette stitch. Next time we'll go for a ribbed cuff. This is my fourth pair, debating which to start next.

The start of my first Project Linus blanket. Yay. It's been awhile since I've used 100% acrylic. I think I'm turning into the yarn snob.

The first group of stitch markers I made. This is one of the worst pictures I've taken.

The second group. I promise these are cooler in real life.

Starting next? I'm trying to decide between the Pretty Comfy Socks pattern that uses Cascade Fixation, orr, a plain ribbed cuff sock with Knit Picks Sock Landscape. Either way, I'm using stash yarn.

Speaking of stash, I got most of it in the database and only have 81 balls! That's great. Except a couple are pretty big balls..heh. That's after selling 5 balls on eBay. I didn't put the stuff in the underbed containers in yet. It's mostly smelly acrylic I've decided is best fit for animal shelter snuggles. And I want to be rid of it. I'd gather that's another 15 or 30 balls.

I'm almost to the shaping on the back of the baby thing. I'm liking it..

P.S. It is so easy to sell yarn on eBay! I bargain priced the yarn so I could be rid of it quickly. After that I packed it in a free box from the USPS, weighed it on a kitchen scale, bought postage with Paypal, and scheduled the mail man for a free pick up the next day! As in, I didn't have to leave my house! Haha. I think when it comes down to it, I'm losing a bit of money with the bargain prices.. but the money's worth more to me than yarn I'll never get to.. at least not in this decade.

Performing Monkey     4 June, 2005, 03:18 pm
Some more whining from yours truly. The background? I started out cashiering at my current job 3 years ago and then moved to the candy department perhaps a year and a half ago. They haven't the hours for me in the department since management is making such huge cut backs lately, so they attempt to fill out my schedule a bit(!) with cashiering hours. I.hate.cashiering. For some reason people assume you are stupid and you need to be told what to do and how to do it. This is okay if you're my boss, my seasoned co-worker, or the one who signs my pay check. This is not okay if you are a customer. Let's make a deal. If I want something, I'll ask--politely, in fact. If you want something, you'll ask--politely, in fact. People are so much more trusting and appreciative when you're strolling around on the floor. I have no idea why that is. I truy, truly hope I remember these life lessons when I'm on the other side of the counter. Please let me remember that just because they are under paid does not mean they are stupid or inadequate. Should I forget this, employment god, you are welcome to take my job and afix me with another cashiering position.

Ahem. I made some purtyful stitch markers yesterday. Some with charms and some with funky glass beads. I thought I would need them for my socks, but I don't. Oh well. I forgot I only have green beads, so I'll wait to make the rest until I have a little more variety.

I have pictures of my finished scarf and broadripple socks hanging out on my camera if I ever get moving and put them up!

I can't decide if I should make a shawl or a project linus blanky next. I need a big project and one that's not as difficult as the lacy baby thing but more erm, engaging than the stockinette socks. I think either would suffice, but I'm feeling pulled toward using stash yarn rather than purchasing more yarn. That spells blanky. Ooo, but a shawl.. I keep drooling over everyone's purty shawls they're making.

Whiney People     1 June, 2005, 01:40 pm
Oh my gosh! I can't believe all the whiney people on lists lately. It's one thing when you're doing it in an email or on a blog where a) people expect to find it or b) it's addressed to one person. It's completely another thing when you fire off a whine to a whole list and the only person that has a solution for your problem is the moderator. I mean, really.

Where are we? The yarn coop group on Yahoo! We recently had a couple co-ops uhm, fail miserably or just take a long time. People email the _whole list_ asking for a refund or ETA. I can't give you a refund. Neither can most of the hundreds of others on a list. Nor can I tell you when the stuff is gonna arrive. Duh. Psst, if you order in a co-op, just expect it to take awhile. Especially if the yarn is hand dyed and you knew it would have to be dyed after the order. Or you knew when you placed your order there would be a delay because of restructuring. That's kinda the trade-off you make when you get those prices.

Then there's the freecycle list. This is a really cool idea, but some people just.. er... Has anyone ever asked for a new laptop? No. But people still complain about the things people are asking for--to the whole list! Then let's make a stink about people not deleting old messages. Hell, if people don't know how to use the search box, they probably don't know how to get to the archives, so it doesn't really matter. And you just added another useless message to the archive. Thanks, for hogging bandwidth and crowding the message bank. Boohaha!

Oops, there I go whining.

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
