Amble
26 September, 2005, 08:23 am
Finished! Yay! With a few days to spare.
These are in Patons Kroy in the color Flagstone. Um, after feeling these I sold off the remaining Patons Kroy in my stash. This yarn has been hand-washed twice and it didn't seem to soften much. Next go-round I will try washing with hair conditioner to see if that helps. I'm afraid to throw them in the washer and dryer as they are close to perfect fit and I don't need them to shrink :) I'm really pleased with these guys, just sorry I used this yarn. Sorry about the bad picture..
I borrowed Gathering of Lace from the library and saw a couple things I want to make. Ha, probably some years down the road at the rate I'm going. But there is a cute little doily I'd like to try.

LYS
25 September, 2005, 09:02 am
There was a recent thread on one of the Yahoo! groups about the troubles folks have with their LYSs. I thought I'd do a little review of the ones I've been to. If you're not in eastern Wisconsin, this will probably bore you :) I can't believe some of the things that came up.. shop owners not keeping posted hours, not willing to order anything, not being helpful..on and on.
In Green Bay there's Patti's Yarn Shop. This is my fav. The owner is always helpful and the shelves are just bursting with yarn. There's classes and if not a class for your specific topic, she offers to give a lesson. I've never seen the shop closed when it was supposed to be open. I've never had to order anything but I believe if asked, she would entertain the idea. Do plan to spend some time there. Sometimes it's a bit busy and it takes awhile to check out. She also has a selection of buttons, but I've never looked as I've never needed. The hours change by season but I believe she is open later one night of the week.
In Bellevue there's Monterey Yarns. The folks here are friendly and helpful. They have classes and an open knit night. Well-stocked shelves but the shop is much more open and airy, with a large table in the middle. I didn't notice many patterns here, though. They have a neat program where they track how much you spend and at a certain point, you get store credit.
These two stores complement each other well. They are opposite in terms of environments, as well as the yarns they carry. Patti's had Patons and Brown Sheep while Monterey has Noro and Opal. Neither store seems to mind fondling.
In De Pere there's Loops and Links. TBD. Still haven't gotten here, mostly because I'm trying to conserve green paper.

Baby Sweater
24 September, 2005, 11:49 am
I sat down to swatch for the Trellis pattern and about the third row of my swatch I realized this was going to be a time-consuming sweater that the kid's gonna outgrow if they even use it. (This pair is picky, and I'd hate to spend a bunch of time on something that won't even be used.) So that's not happening.. On to a search for a no-seam easy baby jacket. Nasty, or practical? Hum. Lots of sportweight stuff out here.
I passed the heel flaps and moved onto the gusset of the Amble socks. Trying to get these done by the end of the month. It would be the first of the Six Sox KAL patterns I would have finished on time..lol. Also made a little more progress on the FBS.
Can you believe Rita? It seems we've learned a bit from Katrina in the way of evacuating, phew! I'm surprised our gas prices haven't budged yet. I really, really hope something good comes out of this in the way of an alternate fuel source. What the heck is the hold up? We have smart people around.. Somewhere in the budget they could be funding research.

Trellis & Ethnic Fest
18 September, 2005, 08:33 am
Eeek.. One of the reasons I picked Trellis was because I thought it had fewer seams than a typical sweater. Wrong. I obviously didn't read very carefully. I went to swatch yesterday and read the directions completely. Pulled out some graph paper and tried to figure out how the pieces would align and if I could make the back and fronts as one. I can't see why it wouldn't work.. so what's the point of all those seams anyway? I once heard something about structure, but never saw that word again.. Anywho, I think I'll wait till tomorrow when I can print a color copy at school. I think my printer needs a new toner and the chart's hard to read. The TLC Cotton Plus feels great! Interested to see how it washes up.
A neighboring village had an Ethnic Fest yesterday. I went with my mom, specifically to see the alpacas. They are really cute. I was surprised to feel how dense their fur is. They sell for like $5 to 15 thousand! Most on the higher end. No wonder alpaca yarn isn't the cheapest thing ever. They were very nice animals, letting kids and adults-that-act-like-little-kids *cough* grab them all day.
Friday's action? Still not sure. My theory, since it involved the public service folks, is that they came to check out the oil/gas stench from the daily puddle this rusting, rotting old car leaves behind. On a bad day, you can smell it from almost a block away. And he drives his little girl around in it. I mean, it could blow up the next time someone lights a cigarette. But anyway, it looks like they found the puddle but the car wasn't in sight and it seems they've done nothing. Here I was all excited because I thought they were gonna haul that thing away. :) I'm pretty certain none of my neighbors were hurt and I didn't see or smell any smoke, so we all seem to be okay!

Action!
16 September, 2005, 12:27 am
Gosh, I heard the dogs barking and the sound of big trucks and sirens. I assumed it was the neighbor getting an oil dump and perhaps an elderly woman getting a ride to the hospital. But I finally got off my rear and look! In front of my house!
Not pictured: 2 ambulances, the public service truck, and two halves of the fire trucks. I have no idea what happened, and I feel slightly stupid staring on my front lawn. Now if I could borrow a kid, I wouldn't feel so stupid. Good thing I've no plans to go anywhere. They've got all exits pretty well blocked. Okay, back to Maury..heh heh.

Amble
16 September, 2005, 11:47 am
The christening gown pattern was in "Nursery Knits" by Tessa Watts. The library copy I had was copyrighted 1987 so you might not find a new copy.
Amble there is waiting for heel flaps. Hopefully this weekend when I can concentrate on carrying the pattern down the heel and working the wrong side of a chart.
This has been distracting me from knitting. On the one hand I like plastic canvas because it's so easy, but on the other hand, that kinda makes it boring. Not to mention, you can basically only make decorative things. So that's probably the end of that for another long while.
Cotton Plus in navy for Trellis. I'm going for the 12 months size so if I don't get it done in 10, well, make it 9 weeks now, that shouldn't be a huge problem.
No word on the employment thing, again, but I AM registered for my last class! Woohoo! (in a sing-songy voice) I'm gonna graduate.. I'm gonna graduate.. My financial aid should be coming soon, which I might actually need. I visited my old employer yesterday and it seems they've cut the hours even more since I left. So I probably won't get back in if this internship isn't extended. Shucky darn.

Splurging and Some Insight
10 September, 2005, 09:26 am
The splurging? The current Cast On mag and a half pound of fudge in both chocolate and chocolate mint swirl. *drools* Fudge not pictured here because, well.. I dunno.. not because it's all gone! Nope! Oh, and the yarn there? A half pound of fingering merino from Mystical Creation Yarns that arrived in the mail yesterday. That's 1750 yards. It was meant to be socks, but I figure I can get a good 3 or 4 or 5 pairs out of there, and it'd be quite a shame to have 4 pairs of socks in the same colorway. So now I'm undecided. Maybe I'll divide it in half and sell some, or maybe it could be a shawl or some other equally yarn-consuming object. It's the Deep Water colorway.
The insight? I have become such a judgemental person, it's sickening. I'm not sure when it happened.. maybe since I lost some weight and gained some confidence over the past few years. And now I know everything and I'm perfect. Ha-ha! *snort* As an aside, the 10 pounds I gained at Christmas? Not going anywhere. Ugh. Though, I still have 3 months to get them off in time to put them back.. or something.
So yesterday, I sat in front of CNN pretty much all day. It was the first time I watched any news since the big K hit. It was kind of, um, refreshing, to be taken away from my smaller, petty problems. National disasters always have that way of pulling people together and bringing their best side out. It's almost worth it, y'know? Almost.
On a lighter note, I'm thinking of changing the behind-the-scenes of my blog. Perhaps the free version of Moveable Type? Thoughts, anyone? This has served me well, but there's a couple small points missing.
No word on the job.. Also trying to get my last few credits at school sorted out. I would hope to know the results of both by the end of this week. Maybe then my raccoon eyes will go away.
Just working away on the Amble socks. Great pattern, but I'm not digging the yarn at all. Oh, and the baby is 10 weeks away. I think I would feel guilty if I didn't make anything, so now I'm shooting for the Trellis sweater on Knitty. Too bad I ordered navy blue Cotton Plus for it, won't see much of the pattern. Maybe subconciously that's what I was shooting for..hehe. Christmas stocking and sweater for myself are on hold again.
