First Quilt     8 November, 2005, 12:13 am

It is about 40" x 46", which makes it toddler sized for Project Linus needs. The fabric, except the border/backing, was on clearance at Wal-mart. I've always been bad at picking colors, so feel free to tell me they suck. Can you tell I was shooting for gender-neutral? haha. (Those little green things are frogs.) Still working on my quarter inch seams, but hopefully it will bring a smile to some little kid's face.

I turned the second heel for the boring pair of socks. Not much else happening. Might pick out some Christmas fabric for potholders today..or not. The Cranks and the new chocolate factory movie came out, so I might go rent those. Oh, and my parents decided to go the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert thing this year, so I got a ticket for that, too. Splurging a little? *nod*

I had an interview this morning. I think it went pretty well, but they don't typically hire entry-level folks. Go figure.

Holiday Craft Fair     7 November, 2005, 02:54 pm
Yesterday I went to the local Senior Center's Holiday Craft Fair. Lots of cute stuff, I got some good ideas. I was disappointed how cheap everything was, though. This is their big fundraiser, I don't see how they make much of anything after the cost of materials. Their labor is worth so much more than a dollar for say, a Christmas ornament.

Oh well, that's today's whine. I finished a quilt and tied it this morning. It's in the wash now, picture later. I'm at the halfway point on the edging of the second mystery shawl. I also turned a heel on the sock last night and I'm onto the heel flap of its mate.

Shawl Edging     5 November, 2005, 05:54 pm

Sorry for the crusty picture. My parents got a new digicam and obviously I don't know much about it :D This is the mystery shawl, clue 5 in progress. I'm probably about a third of the way finished. I'm just about to the end of the first 440 yard ball and can't see how this shawl will take 1200 yards, but this is a first for me, so what do I know?

I'm really lost lately. I spend more time wondering what to do with myself than actually doing anything. I'm glad to have all this time to myself, but my dad's starting to harass me about getting a job. I guess I can see that. If I had a 22 year old mooching off me I'd probably be the same way. In addition to that, I racked up my first real medical and dental bills in the time span of about three weeks..lol. The last time I was unemployed was 5 years ago and the only thing I had to have $ for was regular old spending cash. I do have an interview next week for something career-related, hoping good things come out of that. I'm so sick of filling out applications, y'know? Especially those online ones with very limited choices. I hate not knowing where I'll be, what I'll be doing in 5 months, never mind 5 weeks.. Okay, that's enough whine. I know I have it made in so many ways. Not to mention that I could be doing like 60 hour weeks in a matter of months, so I ought to enjoy all my free time..haha.

Mystery Shawl     1 November, 2005, 10:05 pm
I dove into the last clue and it didn't take long to make a boo-boo. I happily ripped out knowing my lifeline was in place. I hit a number of snags when I got to the cast on. Dunno what the deal was. In my frustration I just kept pulling, and snapped the yarn a buncha times. In the end, I pulled out the lifeline and ripped stitches one by one until I had enough yarn to spit splice to the ball. That was a first for me, and totally exciting! Almost worth the trouble..hehehe. Replaced the lifeline and left it alone for a day. Picked it up again and I'm off! I did make a small mistake or two, but they're staying put :)

Can't get the quilting off my mind. Already decided I could do small Project Linus blankets to learn with, and that would make supplies a bunch cheaper. Ehm, and the rotary cutting is really appealing, but not so cheap. I gather you buy those supplies once in a blue moon, though. This leads me to decide how to buy this stuff without feeling guilty, with no money coming in n all. First idea was to sell yarn stash until I have enough. Flop. The only yarn I wanna part with, I'm pretty sure no one would pay for. The second was to get back on Joann's mailing list and use a coupon each week or two until I have everything. That would take like, weeks or months though, and I might be employed by then, if I'm lucky. Wonder if Joann's honors Michael's coupons.. Maybe I'll try the old-fashioned way before investing.

It's a Boy!     29 October, 2005, 04:33 pm
Yes, we knew that. There, I'm officially an aunt. My new nephew was around 2 weeks early but he's pretty happy and healthy. Mom too, although she looked more tired than baby. :) My mom and I gifted our handknits and they seemed pleased. Mom finished her blanket this morning and we washed them today after hearing the news. I still have visions of my knits unravelling in the wash so it's always good to see them come out looking as they did when they went in.

This is clues 1-3 of the second mystery shawl:

This is a little section of clue 4:

My questions are answered and I re-read clue 5 enough times that I think I understand what I'm doing. Put in one more life line today and I think I will get a start on that tonight. Um, has anyone else noticed the crap they try to pass as Howl-o-ween specials and so forth and so on? Yeesh. Makes for great knitting time, though.

P.S. Why yes, those pictures dooo upload awfully quickly.

Clue 4     28 October, 2005, 10:05 pm
In sad news, I slept until 9am, knit most of the day in my pajamas until 4pm when I went grocery shopping. I took a break to make some malted milk cookies. That's hard to beat.

So yeah, I finished clue 4. Pictures of 3 and 4 coming soon. I'm caught up! I fudged a bit through the last few rows as I was making stupid mistakes and my lifelines were pretty sparse. Now I'm waiting for answers to a couple other people's questions 'cause I'm in the same boat for clue 5. Last one. There's been some concerns floating around about the shawl being too small. I guess that's a chance we took making a "mystery shawl." Maybe I will give it to someone else if it isn't large enough. Not too worried. The yarn was totally cheap and I definitely enjoyed and learned some things in the process so all is not lost. Although I have yet to finish the first of three balls in the suggested yardage and we're starting the border..hehe.

No progress on anything else. Yes, I purchased another pair of circulars for that mystery shawl. As soon as I get it off the needles I will go back to the cardigan with them. Or maybe start the first mystery shawl..heh heh.

I'm thinkin' mittens are next, but I'm having trouble finding a pattern for women's mittens with sportweight yarn, which is what I have in my stash.

I have also been eyeballing spindles. It came up on one of the lists I read. I've considered it before but decided I didn't use enough wool to warrant learning to spin my own. I've finally realized the beauty of wool and don't want socks of any other. I keep trying to convince myself that soon I will be so busy working full time n such that knitting will be more than enough!

Clue 3     26 October, 2005, 09:20 am
is done. I forgot to take a picture and then I went ahead and picked up the stitches for Clue 4, on straight needles, so it is not very picture worthy. I don't know how naive-sounding this is, but I hope we don't need the bind off edge for picking up stitches. As hard as I tried to make it loose, the first few stitches are teeny tiny.

I started a pair of socks. That's 4 WIPs if anyone's counting. A few too many :) Oh well..

DSL has arrived. It is so cool! Blog surfing is so much easier! Unfortunately my brother has already started downloading crap, so it is only a matter of time before the computer is filled with hard-to-remove spyware, adware, and the like. Better stock up on the anti-viral software..

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
