I'm Thankful For...
24 November, 2005, 10:31 pm
but first, I hope everyone had, or is having, a really great Thanksgiving!!
family
a warm place to call home
my critters
mostly good health
and of course, yummy yarn
You know there's a whole ton of other stuff, but those are the important ones. I'm a bit upset that I missed Charlie Brown's special, but the feast we had made up for it :D
I have one more row on the flower basket shawl and then the border. I've started eyeballing patterns for more lace.
I'm considering braving the crowds tomorrow for some good deals on stuff I'll want for my own place, but we'll see.. kinda anxious to hit the end of that shawl. Maybe I'll stay home and knit instead.

Life
22 November, 2005, 04:33 pm
Has been entertaining. The interview went fine last week and I'm hoping to hear something uh, maybe next week. I had a teeny tiny phone interview today for a different company and the result of that is an interview in two weeks, the day before I start a new job. Gosh. It feels like I have too many application-irons in the employment-fire but I'll be lucky to get something out of it. The new job? Ha. I'll be on the telly making calls to survey folks about diapers n such like stuff for the lowest wage I've had since the fabric store 4 years ago. Ow, I can feel my ego getting bruised already by all the hang-ups. Just for the record, I almost always hang up--right after my name is pronounced incorrectly. My professor once told us how he typically asks whether they are on commission. If they aren't? Click. Oh, and I hate phones to begin with. I truly only have a cellphone for emergency purposes. But anyway, I didn't even have to interview for that one. Besides, green stuff is green stuff and I haven't bought any yarn for what seems like forever. (Probably more like 5 weeks. Psst, I ordered an Addi Turbo. An Addi Turbo! For the price of those things it better be glowing when it gets here. I was looking for a 40" size 0 Inox that I could order online, but that is harder than it first appeared.)
Knitting? Um...not so much. I have two repeats on my flower basket shawl and then the edging. I lost steam a little while ago. Didn't fix the socks yet, need to put a lifeline in and rip. I've been trying out different ways of holding the yarn in an attempt to make my gauge a little more consistent. That on the lacy Fishtail Scarf where I figure it won't be so noticeable.
Oh! And for the record, this Friday, that dreadful Friday after Thanksgiving? The first time I won't be working in four years. I know, that's nothing to you folks who work real jobs, but I will treasure not being a retail slave on this Black Friday. :D

Socks
16 November, 2005, 11:56 am
Ehm. I didn't bother checking gauge until this morning. I'm doing the toe decreases and figured it'd be a good time to check, seeing as the socks look just huge. I'm getting 6.5 sts/inch with 72 sts for a guy's sock. Duh. I just found a pattern now and it's suggesting 8.5-9 sts/inch for that number of stitches. Pooh. Send 'em through the washer/dryer on high and hope they shrink? Or rip back to the cuff? I don't think I have any needles small enough to get me to that gauge..lol. I can't believe I made such a foolish mistake.. Okay, yes I can.
In other news, it's snowing!! Just flurries, though. Ah, and I have an interview this week. I'm supposed to have a phone interview next week, also, but they haven't confirmed a time.

Mommy, Im Bo-ored
14 November, 2005, 11:39 pm
Remember those days? Mhm...
Yes kids, you too can have your very own 3-d paper jungle! Just buy any specially marked box of Trix. Apparently there's six. I can see why. This lovely 3-d paper jungle isn't very entertaining. Perhaps a collection of 6 would make all the difference. Psst, I believe I assembled the gray hippo-ish thing incorrectly, so don't go looking too closely.
It is raining. It is supposed to turn to snow overnight. With a little luck, maybe there will be a few inches when I wake up. Enough to shovel and keep me occupied for 30 minutes, eh? I was plotting to volunteer at the shelter tomorrow but I should have gone to bed already. Don't think I'll be able to get up that early anymore.
I sewed a single Christmas potholder. I attached rick-rack from corner to corner diagonally to hold the batting. The potholder and innards shrunk while the rick-rack stayed the same so it is sort of odd looking. Maybe I should prewash the potholder before attaching rick-rack..hrm.
In a bit of a knitting slump. The flower basket shawl is getting old so I only do a couple rows a day. The boring socks look extremely large, and boring. Maybe I will start the Fishtail Lace Scarf, or some socks.. *sigh*

Finished shawl shot. I'm pleased with it. Jury's still out on the whole blocking bit. It's nice to see it get bigger and lacier before your eyes, and magically fix some spots of uneven tension and all that. I hate trying to make things look symmetrical n such, though. Doesn't help that the pattern was slightly off in the symmetrical department to begin with. Other than that I love the pattern. There are a couple mistakes in it if you're just starting, so check the archives.
My parents have been asking what I will do with it. I'm not a shawl person. Dad of course suggested selling it on eBay. He should know better, as a woodworker that has made contributions to charity auctions and sold on consignment. Right now it's hangin' out on a lampshade. :)
I picked up the Wool-ease cardigan again but I think I will rip it. I am pretty sure the acrylic worsted weight combination is the problem. Usually by the end of the first row my wrists are buggin'. Maybe it's time to clean the stash again. Either way, it's not happening. Maybe sometime in the future I can get wool or something that's easier to knit with.

Mystery Shawl 2
10 November, 2005, 07:27 pm
But first, I admire quilters too.. Thanks for the laugh and advice, Jill!
MS2 is finished and blocking as I type. It was about 57" across and 26" down. It's 70" now and maybe 36" down. I think the middle could have stretched more but the bind off along the center part of the top edge was kinda tight. I only used about half the yarn, 600 or so yards. Feels great to be back down to 3 projects on the needles. What to attack next.. probably the socks, so I can get some fun ones started.
