Thanks for the positive thoughts Shara!
These are socks with Regia Cotton Jacquard. As it turns out, the blend is pretty similar to Sockotta, only more expensive :D Sockotta's 45-40-15 and the Regia Cotton Jacquard was 37-38-25. Anywho, while my pattern suggests 7 sts/in and 64 stitches, I like the snug fit that 8.5 sts/in and 64 stitches provides. These were done magic loop style, which I think helped with the gusset holes I usually get. I'm interested in seeing how these hold up through the wash, as well as how warm they are. I have a few balls of Sockotta and one more ball of Regia cotton marinating in the stash. If not to my taste, I'd rather trade them for something that is. But so far so good..
This is Merino Style in Cinnamon for my dad's Christmas present.
I have to get ready for work in a bit. If I still haven't heard anything by the time I get off today, I think I will send an email and try to get an update on the job search from the interview 3 weeks ago. I'm trying not to be impatient, I just wanna know if I'm not being considered anymore. *sigh*

New Knitty
7 December, 2005, 03:27 pm
Yay! Oh, and I can't believe I forgot about St. Nick's Day yesterday. Hope there were good things in your stocking!
I'm liking Bristow and Blu is kinda interesting. Besides the picture being a little freaky, Pomatomus look like fun. Wow, is that two sock patterns in one issue? Thuja looks interesting too, maybe dad needs a pair of socks..haha. No ordinary Stocking Caps here. Mrs Beeton, kinda fun, no?
That reminds me, the first day of work was fine. I sat around watching basically. But it is truly chilling there. People bring handwarmers to work and sit under blankets, I kid you not. So I might need to make a pair of wrist warmers. I rented March of the Penguins and Polar Express, plus a bunch from the library, so I guess I know what I'm doing tonight. That's right, sitting and knitting..

Socks
6 December, 2005, 09:00 am
All that's left is a 3 needle bind off. Actually, I sat there for a minute last night trying to figure out how I was going to bind off with one circular. And then it hit me. THREE needle bind off. *nod* That should happen tonight.
Today's the first day of the job. I'm a little nervous. I was actually sleeping well until someone (probably my mother) let the phone ring and ring and ring. And you know when I finally dragged my tail end out of the bed and picked up the phone, no one was there! I didn't pick out my clothes yet. I don't have many so it's not hard, but I've worn uniforms most of my work life. Between the wardrobe expansion in the past week and the Knit Picks order I'm planning, I'm pretty sure my first pay check is gone already. :)
The interview yesterday was disappointing. I'm glad they were honest with me. They're bringing in new technology that will eliminate the positions they are filling right now. This means that 6-12 months down the line, if you want a job, you're only decent chance will be if you have the skills to be promoted and if you are willing to relocate for that promotion. Cincinnati, Dallas, San Diego were some of the areas mentioned. A wee tiny adventurous part of me thinks it would be fun to live somewhere besides Wisconsin, but the realistic part of me knows after moving across states or the country for a mediocre position, I'd wanna be back in the midwest in like 3 months, tops. Not to mention my education getting stale in those 6-12 months. Most of it has already been sitting a good 6 months.
I expect the knitting will be pretty sparse as I embark on the last week and a half of my degree (WOOOHOOOOO) *ahem* and work out the new job. Oh yeah, and that Christmas thing. Still waiting on the yarn for my dad's present. Puh. Should also be sending out a couple more resumes while I wait for news. Oo, gotta get ready for work. Haven't said that in nearly two months!!

Job Stuff
3 December, 2005, 09:49 am
I think the interview went well. The job sounds really nice. The one thing that makes it slightly less than ideal is that it is located 2 hours away. If, and this is a really big if, I were offered both positions, I would have one hell of a time deciding. Which brings me to my next question. Can you tell potential employers to wait while you think about it? heh. And then can you think about it for a week or two? Anywho, after Monday I'll have 4 interviews in, three of which were for actual open positions, so hopefully something comes of one of them. I'm really getting sick of the interview thing. Come to think of it, it's only been like 7 interviews in 7 months so it's not that bad. I'm starting to get over my nerves, at least. It's so hard to wait. I was thinking yesterday, even if I did want to call and check up on these places, I don't even have contact info. Bleh. Guess that means, "don't call us, we'll call you." It's funny but I don't think I've ever been this stressed in my life. Trying to find new ways to deal with it..and trying to prepare for rejection all at the same time.
So there's no knitting happening, just had to vent. Yesterday I had too much caffeine. Couldn't sit still and concentrate for the life of me. I have been eyeballing two shawls in the Folk Shawls book from the library. Both suggest Harrisville Designs Shetland. I guess I'd need $45-50 dollars worth of yarn, plus shipping. Granted, they're square-ish shawls, but that's a lot for something I might never use. I finally found it's considered a fingering weight, so I'm thinkin' about the dye-your-own stuff from Knit Picks. Much cheaper.

Shawl Picture
1 December, 2005, 10:18 am
Whew! The problem was that the auto-focus was OFF. Hell-oo. Poor mother :) When my dad doesn't know where something is he sets to pushing buttons without regard.
So. This is the Fiber Trends Flower Basket Shawl in Knit Picks' Alpaca Cloud in the Horizon colorway. Ignore the funny points 'caues I forgot to straighten 'em. It is about 74" across and 36-37" down the middle. I used less than 880 yards and the recommended amount was 1200, which probably means my gauge was off again. The suggested finished measurements are like 90" across and 45" down the middle. But anywho. It fits pretty well, just in case I ever decide to wear it.
It is snowing beautifully! Gotta get the dogs out for a walk in that stuff :) I hope they didn't leave a ticket on my street-parked car. I also hope it clears up by tomorrow. Have the 5 hour round trip into unknown territories..lol.

Emily-ville

Okay, I was planning to furnish a picture of the blocked shawl. The camera keeps producing fuzzy pictures. Maybe it doesn't know what to focus on? Um. So anyway, I'll try later, because maybe the operator has something to do with the problem...
I started a pair of socks magic-loop style on my glowing size 0 Addi Turbos. I'm getting a whopping 8.5 sts/inch, so as soon as I finish these I will go back to the monster socks. I'm really digging this magic loop thing. More than 2 socks on 2 circs, more than DPNs.
No more of this pertains to knitting. :)
Not much else going on. My mom is in some sorta Christmas funk. We made toffee this weekend. I made white chocolate covered pretzels Monday while she made fruitcake. Yesterday we did three batches of frosted cookies--roll-outs and gingerbread men. Mm, so good. Might need to dig out some bigger pants, heh.
To recap the job thing, I haven't heard anything from the folks I interviewed with almost two weeks ago. I have an interview Friday and one on Monday. On Tuesday I start the new job. The staffing agency woke me up to tell me they would be closed Friday so I need to come tomorrow or Monday.. I'm most anxious to start the new job so I don't have to sit around waiting for a phone call. Somebody? Anybody? Please?! Just tell me you want me and you'll pay me a tidy sum. Or at least enough to pay the rent and the student loan payments. In the words of a former co-work, I work like a banshee. You won't be sorry. I promise.
You know how people harbor idealistic pictures around certain events? Like graduating... In my mind I pictured my dream job sitting at the door of the commencement ceremony or something, waving a paper with pretty numbers and a dollar sign in front of them. Telling me to start January 2nd. With a sign on bonus. Bahahaha. Never pictured all the interviews, the tight pants suit, 2 and a half hour car journeys to get to the interview in the tight pants suit...
In other news, I told my parents I wasn't doing Christmas presents this year. Just in case. I honestly wouldn't consider it, but I had uber-cheap handcrafted lace bookmarks as a backup plan and didn't want them to be disappointed. When my dad casually mentioned he wanted a scarf the wheels turned. The yarn is on its way. I'm thinking of finding some "jewelry" for mom since she has the shawl now. Don't know about the others.

Finished!
26 November, 2005, 00:02 am
The Flower Basket Shawl. Obviously I need to weave the ends in and block it yet. I used less than 2 balls of Alpaca Cloud in Horizon. Didn't measure yet. Went hunting for welding rods today and came up empty handed. Seems I need to hit a welding supply store, but neither one was answering the phone today. My dad agreed to help me look for something tomorrow. The suggested bind off, sort of a k2togTBL, was neat. Came out pretty stretchy, might have to try that one again.
Sassy in some batting. I suppose it looked comfy to her but I can't imagine that scratchy crap would be at all cozy. This is an older picture I found while getting the shawl pic.
Oh, my mom claimed the second mystery shawl. It smells musty, by the way. I guess that happened during the blocking. Dunno where to block this guy so it doesn't smell. I was pretty hard pressed to find that spot :(
I also remembered I have the Leaf Lace Shawl pattern waiting. Some green Zephyr should be coming one of these weeks. I ordered through the co-op at a great price and now wish I had gotten more. Oh well. Hopefully it comes up again :) With that I think I will concentrate on some other UFOs..
