Donuts
22 January, 2006, 00:26 am
I love donuts, so when I saw this little quiz, I had to take it.
You Are a Boston Creme Donut
|
You have a tough exterior. No one wants to mess with you.
But on the inside, you're a total pushover and completely soft.
You're a traditionalist, and you don't change easily.
You're likely to eat the same doughnut every morning, and pout if it's sold out.
|
Mm, donuts... It's pretty accurate. Sometimes I wonder how they can be so accurate. Then I realize that I can attribute almost anything to myself if I take a quiz and it tells me so. Then again, I don't like the same donut every day. More like a nice variety, plus if I ate a donut every day in addition to all the other crap I eat, I'd be decidedly blimpy. Doesn't that picture just make you crave a donut? Oops, knitting..
Jaywalkers - I meant the fit on my feet, pulling 'em over the big ankle part. For perspective, I usually do 64 stitches with a size 0 needle for a snug fit. I did the 76 stitch version of this pattern with the same needle. I was thinking it had something to do with the stitches being placed on a bias and maybe lacking the stretchiness of ribbing or stockinette stitch? (Shh, I worked in a fabric store for a year and a half and still can't quite figure out this bias stuff.) Or it could have something to do with my inconsistent gauge. Maybe I was just knitting tighter. I did have to bend the needles back into shape afterward. :-o
I started an afghan made of 170 or so little "leaves." Slightly worried that all the leaves will be finished but never joined? *nod* It will be acrylic for cost and durability concerns. The sample in the magazine was very colorful.
I finished hat 3 for 25 Things and also picked through my wash cloth collection to send one last batch off to Cloths for Katrina. The wash cloth group seems to be losing steam, hopefully because victims are moving into more permanent shelters, rather than our losing interest or getting lazy. The whole bit seems so far away now, I sure hope we learned some things :)

Pictures
19 January, 2006, 09:28 am
Those are Jaywalker done in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in the River colorway. They're tough to get on but once there they feel great. I like the colors but don't see where "River" came from. I'm one of those people that rarely makes a pattern twice, but I'm thinkin' this one would be good with some other handpaints I have.
This is the Fishtail Lace Scarf done in Blue Sky Aplaca Sport. I like how it turned out, but it is a bit bigger than the pattern called for. I think smaller diameter blocking rods would help with the wonky edge.
Interviews 6 and 7 are on the calendar. I'm starting to wonder..

Old Lady Scare
18 January, 2006, 10:59 am
We affectionately refer to our older beagle as the old lady. Saturday she was playing with our other pup and hurt her leg. It looked pretty bad and we were afraid that if the injury required surgery, that'd be a no-go. She couldn't get in at the vet until yesterday afternoon so it's kinda been a rough couple of days around here. The good news is the injury should heal most of the way on its own and that should be good enough to keep her goin'. Surgery was the other option but not the best one for a 12 year old with a bad ticker. Whew! So all we have to worry about for the next couple months is lifting her onto the couch :)
I have two FOs but no pictures to prove it. Maybe later today.. The Jaywalker socks are done as is the Fishtail lace scarf. I've got the Cascading Leaves socks on the needles as well as the Leaf Lace shawl, and a children's hat with some stinky Encore. I'm trying to poke through patterns to find something to make with 3 balls of Katia Espiga, a sport-ish weight cotton/acrylic blend. I'm hoping to find a baby sweater or something for the 25 things craft-along.
Ooh, and I turned my hands pink dying some sock yarn with Wilton's icing coloring. Who knew icing color was so deadly? It was an interesting experience. I wanted to practice not-felting-the-yarn during the dying process, before I try dying the cone of yarn. I succeeded there but the jury's still out on the painting job.

Red Sweaters
13 January, 2006, 09:33 am
Red Sweaters! Take a minute and check it out if you haven't seen it. In short, I bought my Cherry Red colored Red Heart and ended up giving it away when life got in the way. Now I'm sorry I didn't take part. :) Anyhow, what an awesome way to let people stop and think for a few minutes.
Work was canceled yesterday so I casted off the scarf and started the shawl. Hopefully the scarf gets blocked this weekend, if I can find a place to do it. As I was knitting on the socks I realized I had done too many gusset decreases. I managed to drop one stitch down to the last decreases and take those out so now I'm just a little short, but the socks fit.
Happy Friday the 13th..haw

Knitting Stuffs
11 January, 2006, 11:49 am
I've been working on the Fishtail lace scarf. I'm pretty far along, near the end of the second of three balls of alpaca. I imagine a good couple of movies would see the end of that. I have Superstar and the Family Guy movie rented and waiting. It is pretty. So far I've been ignoring mistakes so it might be interesting, though.
I turned the heels and started the gusset decreases on the Jaywalker socks. I substituted the double decrease. I forget what's called for but sl1, k2tog, psso is much easier for me. I love how they're turning out but they're fitting mom better than me. I'm considering giving them to her but she's sworn wool is itchy and also the colors might be a little too funky. Not to mention being really selfish with my first Lorna's Laces. *cough*
I'm debating the next projects. I like to have three going but I can't decide. Another pair of socks for sure, but those have to wait for the Jaywalkers to get off the needles. I'm thinking Cascading Leaves from the Townsend KAL might be next. The Leaf Lace shawl is also waiting but I don't know what to do with that. I guess it's time to suck it up and swatch.

Socks and Things 1 & 2
7 January, 2006, 06:25 pm
These are the boring socks. Finally done, except to wash and block. I ended up getting 8.5 sts/inch with size 0s and Knit Picks Essential. Don't remember what the suggested gauge was but that's much better than 6.5 sts/inch, no? I think the Jaywalker socks are next. I've balled up some Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in the River colorway. So pretty...
The wool cones I referred to last post. According to my calculations, there's a little over 4000 yards on each. The black (it's real black, the picture's a lil funky) is laceweight and the gray is fingering weight. I think I will do shawls with both and maybe some socks with the gray. By my calculations I can get like 2 square shawls out of the gray or 3-4 triangle shawls or like 9 pairs of socks..lol. It will definitely be dyed, at least some of it. Not sure whether to dye before or after knitting. Oh well, I have enough to work on now, so it can wait.
These are things 1 and 2 for charity. Both children's hats. The colors are off, again. It's red-red Wool-ease and navy blue TLC Cotton Plus. Not sure where they're going yet. I did the navy hat first and did decreases as directed, but they were holy lookin'. The next hat I put a stitch between the decreases and like the results much better. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what...
These have been knitted for awhile but I couldn't possibly manage to get the buttons on..heh. Thankfully the button thread was sitting in plain sight with a needle attached, and there was a good movie (Simon Birch) on television.
Oh! And I have an interview and two phone interviews scheduled for next week. Being careful about getting my hopes up.

Plans for the New Year
2 January, 2006, 03:37 pm
Wow, that might be a record number of comments! If I don't know where your blog lives and you happen to make it back this way, please leave the addy.. I like to visit.
Okay, my plans for the new year.
1. Volunteer more.
2. Keep the stash at a reasonable level.
3. Knit a real sweater.
In the spirit of the first one, I joined 25 Things for Charity. To be fair, most of these folks have been crafting since October. But I only stumbled upon it now and it seems to fit in well with my plans. I think I'll start with winter hats, as I have lots of oddballs of acrylic mixes. Then maybe I'll attack the fabric that's been hanging out for a few years for some blankies.
Now for the stash. I can _almost_ fit all of it into my four under-the-bed storage bins. When I get to that point, I'll be happy. Unfortunately, I found some cones of wool on eBay that seemed like a steal, so they should be on their way soon. Honestly, I haven't had any new yarn for what seems like forever so I'm due. :)
Last, the sweater. I started a sweater of Wool-ease awhile ago. It's hard on my wrists so I stopped. I will try again when I clear a few other projects off the needles.
For some yucky news, I heard from the last interview and the answer was nix. Back to square one. I keep telling myself there's a reason for it all. 10 or so applications, 4 interviews, and nothing..? I so didn't expect that..lol. I have picked out what I believe to be are mistakes in my process so hopefully that helps.
