WIP #6     20 February, 2006, 04:57 pm
Bah... I cast on for the mystery shawl last night. I only had enough size 2 double pointed needles. I guess that's good because this stuff is really thin - thinner than the Zephyr and Alpaca Cloud I have. But it will probably be tiny unless I add some repeats or something somewhere. We'll see. I can always give it away if it's too small. I know this sounds nerdy but there's a new level of anxiety having this many projects on the needles. With 2 of them being large-ish, there's not much hope for hacking away at them either :)

And another whine! There's finally a local knitting group of sorts. Except it's at the university. And I graduated two months ago. Not that anyone would kick me out or anything (at least, I don't think they would), but now I hardly ever make the 50 minute drive.

Not much else going on. After our big snow last week and then the big freeze this weekend, we're leveling off. Still good crafting weather though.

Eep! I'm not used to having this many on the needles. Plus, the mystery shawl starts Friday. And yarn for my first sweater just arrived..

Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in the Hyacinth color.

My second quilt. It's about 48 x 60". The light blue flowery stuff actually came out of my fabric stash, which isn't nearly the size of my yarn stash, fortunately. The darker blue with stars started with glitter on it. I didn't check the washing instructions when I bought it 'cause I didn't notice the glitter till I came home. Anyway, the only glitter left after the first washing was on the 2 inches nearest the selvage on either side. I love how fast these things are! I got the material Wednesday and had it finished Sunday. I was even back to work on Friday, and didn't touch it Saturday. It will be going to the local Project Linus.

This is the back of a baby sweater in Katia Espiga, from a Debbie Bliss book. I think it's a basic cardigan in stockinette stitch with seed stitch borders..

This is the Leaf Lace Shawl. I've only gotten through four pattern repeats of 18 or so. I'm really liking how it's turning out. So far no mistakes, and obviously I'm getting cocky with the lifelines..

These are the Glad(d?) Raggs from the Six Sox KAL. My beads arrived Monday so I "had" to start those. I'm thinkin' these are going to be on the heavy side. I was worried about the colors working together but I think there's enough contrast to show up without contrasting too much. The beads are light blue glass with a pinky-purple center. I think the pinky-purple is painted on or something since some of these buggers are sticking to each other, and I surely hope that part doesn't wash off.. Now's a good time to think of that :D

This is the blue baby ripple afghan in Pound of Love. I originally got for that cabled sweater on Knitty which I cannot think of right now..

These are leaves for an afghan. I think there's perhaps 17 or 18 of them and I need about 8x that amount. Not to mention weaving ends in and joining.

Greenies! Does your dog eat those things? I hear they're pretty popular. Anderson Cooper actually did a thing on them last night 'cause apparently some dogs have died or nearly died as a result of obstructions. Apparently they don't break down well. Just.. so you know..

Hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day! We ...

Socks     8 February, 2006, 10:55 am

These are basic socks in Bernat's Hot Sox in the Hippie Hot color. I used 62 stitches, a stocking heel flap, and a star toe. I wanted to do without a heel "flap" but none of the patterns I found used the same amount of stitches (or even 64) and I was too lazy to do math and rip.

All this acrylic knitting is giving my wrists fits. Maybe that means I'll finally get somewhere on my shawl :) I bought beads on eBay but the seller requested some goofy checkout system, which of course didn't work. I finally got a working link yesterday when s/he sent a delinquent bidder sort of email. Apparently my email on Saturday asking about the broken link was ignored.. Maybe I should have messed with the local beadery after all.

As usual, no news on the job stuffs. I had the day off yesterday so I met someone about an open position. It's not quite in the realm of what I went to school to study so they'll talk it over and suggested I think it over and they'll get back to me in a few days to let me know if they want to interview. (haha! better make it a week, or two.) "Soon" in this business is shaping up to be over a week and counting.

Um, so. I think I'll watch Wallace & Gromit and maybe make some muffins. I really love these extra days off - they make me appreciate being at work.

Baby Socks     4 February, 2006, 11:08 pm
Longest Line Contest! Haha! So cool! I think I can dig up some ball ends and whip up some baby socks before April, eh?

Rather than getting anything finished and off the needles, I started another project - a ripple baby afghan. I've been wanting to do a ripple afghan for quite awhile. This one will probably be a boring all-blue afghan, though. I did get somewhere on the socks at least; they have heels now.

We got out of work early on Friday and Monday is canceled so hopefully I can get the socks finished soon. The other projects, two afghans and a shawl, are pretty hopeless in that department.

My diploma came today. It wasn't that exciting. What do you do with such an expensive piece of paper? Frame and hang it on a wall? Ehm.... Oh, and I got to our little city's bead shop yesterday. The beads, while very pretty, weren't marked with sizes. The owner or worker noted it would help if I brought in the pattern. I guess they go by millimeters. The pattern wasn't marked in mm so I went the easy route and browsed eBay in my pajamas this morning. So many choices, it took me like an hour to decide, and I even had my mom in front of the computer eyeballing colors with me.

Oh, and a happy belated Ground Hog's day!

Mystery Shawl 3     2 February, 2006, 05:07 pm
I peeked at the design just a bit ago. I know, where's the mystery? But there's so many great patterns I want to try, wouldn't want to waste any time on something that doesn't spark my interest. Promptly signed up, just waiting for the invite. I don't know where that's fitting in the knit-plan, but I'll make it fit. I should have some yarn around here to do the trick.

Thennn the Six Sox KAL pattern for February/March came out. I waited to get yarn till I saw it, for the same reasons as above. Turns out they're beaded! Never tried beads... And a neat lacy kinda pattern even without the beads. I got some Wildfoote on eBay. My Hobby Lobby didn't have the beads, but they're so cheap on eBay that it shouldn't be a problem.

No job news. I think a skills assessment kicked my butt on Wednesday. I'd repeat some of the odd questions here, but I signed a confidentiality agreement. *snort* On that note, better get knitting so there will be empty needles when I need them :)

Co-ops     28 January, 2006, 10:33 am
At the Yarn Co-op there are Addis and Interlacements yarn up! Unfortunately they don't have the 40" jobbies so I won't be doin' that one, but the prices are in the $6-11 range for the most part, plus a co-op fee. Interlacements has a pretty nice selection, including two weights of sock yarn. Yum, good thing I realized my sock yarn stash was wasting away...

Not much in the find-a-job world. Neither great news, nor bad news on that front. I've been skimming some textbooks for a little refresher. Therefore, no knitting's happening here. That's not entirely bad. I get these swollen little bump things on my fingers, apparently during times of stress, and when they're not itching sumpin' fierce, they hurt.

Gosh, we had record-breaking high temperatures yesterday. In the 50s, in Wisconsin, in JANUARY. I'm curious to see what explanations are being offered.. Makes me think of El Nino. It's not all that bad, except we're getting rain instead of snow. I'd much rather have snow.

Yesterday     26 January, 2006, 09:59 am
Whew! It was a four hour drive each way, and then the test and interviews took four hours. My mom ended up having off so she very generously offered to come along. It sounds like a really great place to be. I "passed" the test but they won't know about the rest for a couple days (which, in my experience means something to the effect of a week or two or possibly longer). It's weird how you get different vibes from different interviews. Sometimes you come out feeling great from the first and you feel, well, stupid after the second. Then you wonder if they feel the same way about your performance, and if so, which group has the final say? Haha.

In anticipation of starting a new project in the car ride I finished these Tuesday:

Cascading Leaves from the Townsend Socks KnitALong. These are done in Knit Picks' Essential in the Pine color. I added a couple repeats and did a star toe instead of the wedge toe and I'm loving 'em. They are a bit scratchy so hopefully a trip through the wash helps. I managed not to have any of those pesky holes in the gusset area, except it doesn't really matter since the cuff is filled with YOs.

I started some socks with a Bernat acrylic/nylon blend that's been in my stash for some time. I can't believe I'm saying this, but my stash is actually dwindling. At least, I only had four choices if I didn't want to divide the yarn into two balls. ;) Some weekend I should sit down and divide a bunch of balls so I actually have options in a quick fix.

Oh, and here's Thing 3, a child's hat in Encore worsted.

My mom was asking why my hats look like mushrooms. I believe the pattern calls for two needle sizes, a size smaller for the ribbing. But I only have a few circs small enough for the hats and I usually end up two sizes smaller for the ribbing. Hopefully with a head inside it won't look so funky.

So that's that. I'm also working on the Leaf Lace shawl, but I stall a bit after every repeat when it comes to putting a lifeline in..

Hi! I live with my cat and a crabby parrotlet. Once in awhile I try to crochet but I find knitting much easier.
